🎃 Good design is all about creating the right atmosphere, and fall certainly knows how to make an entrance.

From pumpkins lining the front steps to seasonal color filling planters and garden beds, the landscape becomes part of the celebration this time of year. Thoughtful planting, welcoming entrances, and well-designed outdoor spaces create the perfect backdrop for everything from trick-or-treaters to a quiet evening on the porch.

At WPL, we may spend our days thinking about landscapes on a much larger scale, but we still appreciate the little details that make a place feel festive, welcoming, and distinctly its own.

Happy Halloween from WPL! 👻

A great landscape is more than plants and patios. 🌿

Site planning, planting design, drainage, and outdoor living all influence one another, especially here in Coastal Virginia.

Our latest Landscape Design 101 article breaks down how those pieces work together and why looking at the entire property before designing individual features can lead to a landscape that looks better, functions better, and matures more successfully over time.

🌳 Sometimes understanding a site means getting a little closer to the subject.

During a recent site visit, WPL Landscape Architect Will Serge took a hands-on look at an existing live oak to evaluate its health, structure, and overall condition before design work begins.

Site visits are an important first step in the landscape architecture process because plans only tell part of the story. Walking the property allows our team to observe existing vegetation, grading, drainage patterns, soils, structures, and other site conditions firsthand. For mature trees in particular, understanding their health and stability can help determine what should be preserved, protected, worked around, or addressed as the design develops.

That early assessment helps create a stronger foundation for thoughtful planning and can prevent conflicts later in the project.

And one final site-visit tip: if you can’t find our team, don't forget to look up. 👀🌿

Flooding is reshaping how Coastal Virginia plans, builds, and protects public space.

Our latest article looks at how landscape architecture helps turn flood-prone sites into resilient, functional, and beautiful places, with examples from Norfolk’s Ohio Creek Watershed Project and Virginia Beach’s Ripple Effect flood protection work.

📚 Great designers are shaped by great teachers, mentors, and opportunities to learn from the world around them.

On National Teachers’ Day, we’re celebrating the educators and professionals who help prepare the next generation of landscape architects to think critically about people, place, and the environment.

That connection between education and practice is especially meaningful here in Coastal Virginia, where students have the opportunity to study real challenges involving flooding, resilience, ecological systems, community identity, and the future of our built and natural environments.

WPL Principal Landscape Architect Billy Almond, a 1978 Virginia Tech alumnus, has remained connected to that larger story throughout his career, sharing decades of place-based experience while supporting the dialogue between education and professional practice.

Our latest blog explores Virginia Tech’s landscape architecture program, Billy’s connection to the university, and why mentorship and real-world experience matter so much to the future of the profession.

🍂 Looking for a native tree that brings something to the landscape almost year-round?

American persimmon, Diospyros virginiana, is one of those quietly hardworking native trees. It offers glossy green foliage through summer, warm fall color, distinctive bark, and orange fruit that ripens from September into November, just as many gardens begin to slow down.

That fruit is more than seasonal interest. Once fully ripe, persimmons become an important food source for birds and other wildlife, while the tree’s spring flowers support pollinators earlier in the year.

For Coastal Virginia homeowners, placement is key. Persimmons do best with plenty of sun, well-drained soil, and enough room to mature. Because female trees can drop fruit, they are often a better fit along lawn edges, naturalized areas, meadow margins, and larger backyard spaces than directly beside patios, driveways, or walkways.

In our latest Coastal Virginia Garden Notes, we’re sharing how to plant, care for, and thoughtfully use American persimmon in the residential landscape.

Game On at The Peddie School. 🏟️

The school's planned stadium renovation goes well beyond a new playing surface, bringing together athletics, pedestrian connections, gathering spaces, lighting, stormwater management, and the larger campus experience.

The project also has a special connection to WPL. Principal Landscape Architect and Peddie alumnus Billy Almond has spent more than two years advising on the project as an alum.

Our latest article takes a closer look at the project and why thoughtful site design matters just as much outside the lines of the field.

🍂 Happy first day of fall from WPL!

As the season begins to shift, so do our landscapes. Cooler temperatures, changing leaves, shorter days, and increased rainfall all bring new opportunities to pay attention to how outdoor spaces are performing.

Fall is a great time to observe what worked well through the heat of summer, where drainage may need attention, which plants thrived, and where a landscape could use a little more structure, color, or resilience heading into the next growing season.

Here in Coastal Virginia, thoughtful landscape design means planning for every season.

Happy fall!
