💡 The garage light works—but that exposed splice needs attention!

2023 NEC 300.15 generally requires wire splices to be enclosed in a box or conduit body unless specifically permitted otherwise. This garage light splice needs a properly installed box with a cover, and the box must remain accessible.

Wire connectors and electrical tape alone don’t replace the required enclosure. Working doesn’t always mean safe! ⚡

🌧️ New construction, exposed wiring, and a rain-soaked panel—is this allowed?

The 2023 NEC Article 100 recognizes that a dry location may temporarily experience dampness or wetness during construction. But Section 110.11 still requires indoor electrical equipment to be protected against weather damage.

Temporary moisture doesn’t give us permission to leave an indoor panel exposed to rain. Water-damaged components need proper evaluation before energizing—looking dry doesn’t prove they’re safe.

🎺 GIMME SOME SPACE! 2023 NEC 110.26 ⚡

Just because an electrical panel or disconnect switch is enclosed doesn’t mean working clearance isn’t required!

The 2023 National Electrical Code (NEC), Section 110.26(A), establishes minimum working space requirements around electrical equipment likely to require examination, adjustment, servicing, or maintenance while energized.

⚡ Know Your Clearances!

✅ Width: Minimum 30 inches or the width of the equipment, whichever is greater.

✅ Depth: Typically 36 inches for common 120/240V installations, depending on voltage and working conditions.

✅ Height: Minimum 6 feet 6 inches or the height of the equipment, whichever is greater, subject to exceptions.

✅ Access: Equipment doors and hinged panels must open at least 90 degrees.

🚨 Remember: An enclosed disconnect switch may still require working clearance! A cover doesn’t eliminate the need for safe access.

Working clearance isn’t storage space. It’s SAFETY space!

🎶 GIMME SOME SPACE! GIMME SOME ROOM! ONE-TEN-TWENTY-SIX! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! 🎺

🔥 Fire damage at a receptacle supplied by aluminum branch-circuit wiring—a reminder that proper connections matter.

2023 NEC 406.3(D) requires 15- and 20-amp receptacles directly connected to aluminum conductors to have terminals marked CO/ALR. Connections must also meet NEC 110.14 requirements.

Aluminum wiring alone does not establish the fire’s cause. Device compatibility, connection quality, and proper installation must be evaluated.

⚠️ Keep the damaged circuit off until a qualified electrician evaluates and repairs it.

⚡ STOP SHARING THE MAST!

2023 NEC 230.28 — Service Masts as Supports

Only power service-drop or overhead service conductors are permitted to be attached to a service mast.

That means cable TV, telephone, fiber, broadband, and other communication lines should not use the electrical service mast as their attachment point. These utilities need their own properly installed support.

👀 Look up at the service mast on your next job. You might be surprised how many utilities are sharing it!

2023 NEC 110.26 — Spaces About Electrical Equipment

Required working space and access around electrical equipment must be provided and maintained to allow for safe operation and maintenance.

Ground rod sticking up a little too high… 🤔⚡

Is the rod too long, or did it hit the footer? 😂

Either way, the grounding electrode still needs to meet the installation requirements of 2023 NEC 250.53(G) — rod and pipe electrodes generally need at least 8 ft of length in contact with the soil.

⚡ How would you support this wiring?

The electrical cable supplying this gas furnace is improperly supported. The 2023 NEC requires NM cable to be properly secured and supported under Section 334.30.

How low is TOO LOW for an electrical meter?

The 2023 NEC does not specify a minimum mounting height for an electric meter. Meter height is generally determined by the electric utility’s service requirements.

Many utilities require the CENTER of the meter to be between 3½ and 5½ feet above finished grade.

Always check your local utility’s requirements before installing a meter socket!
