I used to think medicine was the safe career. Now 44% of physicians say they've thought about leaving it.
That's from a July survey of more than 800 physicians. Last year it was 35%.
Turns out I was in that group years before this survey.
About five years into practice, I realized I didn't want to do it anymore. But I had student loans and a family to take care of. I was stuck.
People would say, "You're doctors, you make a lot of money."
Yes. But we have to keep doing doctor to make that money.
When nothing comes in except what you do every day, you're handcuffed to it. The size of the paycheck doesn't change that.
When money comes in from more than one place, you get choices.
Cut back.
Change how you practice.
Stay because you want to.
You don't have to leave medicine. At least release one handcuff.
PS: If your income didn't depend on you, your time, what would you do first?
