❓ Ask Angela: Should My Aging Parents Move Closer to Me?
This is a question more families are beginning to ask as their parents get older.
Maybe Mom and Dad are still doing great on their own, but they live several hours away.
Maybe you've started noticing changes in their health, mobility, or ability to maintain their home.
Or perhaps everyone would simply enjoy being closer together.
Whatever the reason, it's a conversation that deserves thoughtful consideration.
Before making a decision, here are a few questions I'd encourage families to discuss:
🏡 **Is their current home still working for them?**
Are stairs, maintenance, or everyday responsibilities becoming more challenging?
❤️ **Would living closer to family improve their quality of life?**
Being nearby can make visits, appointments, and everyday support easier. But it's also important to consider the friendships, routines, and community they already have.
🔑 **What type of living arrangement makes sense?**
Would they prefer a smaller, low-maintenance home? A single-story property? A senior living community? Or would multigenerational living be an option?
💰 **What are the financial considerations?**
Would they sell their current home, keep it, or possibly rent it? How would the decision affect their long-term plans?
And perhaps the most important question...
**What do your parents want?**
Whenever possible, they should have a meaningful voice in decisions about their future.
As a Realtor, I can help families understand their housing options, evaluate property-related considerations, and think through the logistics of a potential move.
But these decisions often involve more than real estate. Healthcare providers, financial advisers, and legal professionals may also be important members of the conversation.
**Moving closer to family can be a wonderful solution, but it isn't the only solution.**
Sometimes the best first step is simply talking about what everyone needs, wants, and hopes for.
Have you had this conversation with your parents yet?
**Helping you live well in North Texas.** ❤️
