We built our own custom Chicagoland home search tool, and it’s now live in beta! 📍🗺️

We built this tool completely from scratch using live, hyper-current data directly from MRED/MLS GRID. Powered by Claude Code and a custom backend, we were able to bring full-stack development of the app in-house, giving us total ownership over the platform without high vendor costs, long development delays, or reliance on off-the-shelf IDX providers.

If you have a VA disability rating and own your home, you may qualify for a lower property tax bill. You have to apply for it, and each county and state around Chicagoland sets its own rules. Cook County takes applications in the spring, DuPage County renewal forms are due back by October 1, and Indiana’s deadline is January 15.

We compared the Illinois, Indiana, and Wisconsin programs, listed the documents you’ll need, and explained how surviving spouses qualify.

More Cook County Property Tax Appeal Deadlines Are Approaching!

If your property is in one of these Cook County townships, check your 2026 assessment notice before the deadline passes.

📅 Upcoming appeal deadlines:

Proviso: October 27
Orland: November 6
Thornton: November 23
Rich: December 4

Review your property's assessed value and confirm that the details on your assessment notice are accurate. Compare the estimated value with recent sales of similar properties, and check for errors in square footage, property classification, or other property details.

Filing an appeal with the Cook County Assessor is free. You can file on your own, or hire an attorney or an appeal company if you need expert assistance. An appeal may correct an inaccurate assessment, but it doesn't guarantee lower property taxes.

Check the deadline for your township and gather supporting documentation before filing.

Own property in Oak Lawn, Evergreen Park, Alsip or Chicago Ridge? You have until Thursday, Oct 15 to appeal your new assessment.

The Cook County Assessor mailed Worth Township reassessment notices in September. The value on that notice drives your 2027 tax bills, so if it look too high, this is the window to fix it.

Filing is free and online. Pull up the notice, check the square footage and building details, and compare your value to recent sales on your block.

Orland Township owners have a little longer: your deadline is Nov 6.

💡 If you have a VA disability rating of 30% or higher and own your home in Illinois, you could be paying more property tax than you need to.

The state's Homestead Exemption for Veterans with Disabilities takes $2,500 or $5,000 off your home's assessed value at lower ratings. At 70% or higher, it exempts the first $250,000, and the Cook County Assessor says that will likely erase the tax on your home.

Most veterans have to reapply each year, but if you missed a year, Cook County lets you claim it through a Certificate of Error. Our new post covers what to file, what surviving spouses can claim, and what to check when you buy.
