The City of Cape Town has published a draft Short-Term Letting By-law for public comment.

The proposed by-law may affect property owners and operators who advertise properties for short-term letting through online booking platforms. Proposed requirements include:

✅ Registration of listed properties with the City
✅ A City-issued registration number displayed on listings
✅ Information-sharing to determine the correct municipal rating category
✅ Compliance and enforcement measures

Properties used predominantly for short-term letting may be categorised as commercial accommodation and could attract commercial property rates. Long-term rental properties that remain the tenant’s primary residence are not regarded as commercial accommodation.

The closing date for comments is **5 October 2026**.
