Some of Frida Kahlo’s greatest paintings started with a house.

Casa Azul, the cobalt house in Coyoacán where she was born, shaped her work for most of her life. She learned to paint herself in a mirror hung over her bed there. She painted its courtyard, the monkeys and hairless dogs in its garden, and the skeleton on top of her bed, which appears in The Dream, now the most expensive painting by a woman ever sold at auction.

Can a single house and a 26-story residential building share the same architectural logic?

That question, drawn from Le Corbusier’s “A House, a Palace,” shaped Sunday’s conversation at RAY Phoenix with Sharon Johnston, founding partner of Johnston Marklee. Sharon followed it through the firm’s houses, from early residences and artist studios in Marfa to Vault House and Casa de Mont, set against larger work like Ray Nashville. The thread arrived at RAY Phoenix: what it means to design for the desert, and how the building’s color, materials, references, and artist collaborations came together.

Presented in collaboration with The School of Architecture (The School of Architecture) for DESERT DESIGN WEEK | SCOTTSDALE, AZ , and moderated by TSOA President Chris Lasch.

Thank you to everyone involved for making this possible, with special thanks to Kohler for their generous support and to kid sister for the wonderful food and w**e served throughout the afternoon.

Sharon Johnston co-founded Johnston Marklee in Los Angeles in 1998. The firm’s projects span fourteen countries, with work held in the permanent collections of MoMA, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Menil Collection, and SFMOMA. She and Mark Lee received the Richard Neutra Award for Professional Excellence in 2024 and the American Academy of Arts and Letters Award in Architecture in 2022.

Across ceramics, furniture, sculpture, and painting, the show considers the fluid boundary between functional and non-functional work, and the space where utility, materiality, and artistic expression meet.

On view through November 3, Wednesday through Sunday, 12 to 6PM.

A sunken living room, a fireplace lounge, and a communal kitchen, all on one level. The fifth floor at Ray Phoenix is the building’s gathering place, meant to feel like an extension of home.

It’s where you meet new neighbors, cook for a crowd, and host a dinner party where guests stay long after their plates are cleared. Some mornings it’s a quiet corner and a coffee. Some nights it’s a full house.

Ray Phoenix is now leasing with immediate move-ins available. Visit the link in bio to book a tour.

For the last twenty years of his life, Monet painted almost nothing but one pond, and he designed it himself.

He moved to a farmhouse in Giverny in 1883 and spent the rest of his life turning its orchard and a marshy field across the road into something to paint, with eight gardeners by the end. He painted the dining room yellow, walls and furniture both, and hung more than two hundred Japanese prints through the house, including Hokusai, Hiroshige and Utamaro. Over the pond went a green footbridge, later covered in wisteria that still blooms every May.

The water lilies became his whole subject. He painted the pond again and again, in different light and different seasons. The day after the armistice in 1918, he offered his largest canvases to France, and they hang in the two oval rooms he helped plan at the Musée de l’Orangerie.

After his stepdaughter Blanche died in 1947, the garden grew wild, with trees coming up through his studio. In 1977 Gérald Van der Kemp, the former chief curator of Versailles, began restoring it with money from American patrons, working from old photographs, Monet’s plant orders, his letters and his paintings. It reopened in 1980.

This year marks a hundred years since his death, and the Orangerie’s centenary exhibition opened yesterday!

The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum looks like it was lifted out of Venice, and in a way, parts of it were.

At seventeen, Isabella told a friend that if she ever inherited money, she’d build a house full of beautiful pictures for people to come and enjoy. More than forty years later, she did. She bought windows, arches and columns from dealers in Venice, sometimes from photographs alone, and the eight balconies around the courtyard came from the Ca’ d’Oro on the Grand Canal. Then she moved into the top floor.

A few of our favorite details: the Titian Room, where she hung one painting over pale green silk cut from one of her own dresses. John Singer Sargent’s El Jaleo, a Spanish dancer mid-performance, which she gave its own space by splitting a music room in two. And the Roman mosaic at the center of the courtyard floor, a Medusa almost two thousand years old that was dug up outside Rome in 1892.

Thirteen works were stolen in 1990 and none has come back. The museum is free to visit on Thursday nights from five to nine, and always free if your name is Isabella!

RAY Presents: The School of Architecture (TSOA) in conversation with Sharon Johnston (Johnston Marklee)

For Desert Design Week, Sharon Johnston, founding partner of Johnston Marklee, joins us at RAY Phoenix for a lecture and conversation moderated by TSOA President Chris Lasch alongside students from the school.

The conversation traces the firm’s work from early residential projects to arts institutions like the Menil Drawing Institute, the Whitney Museum of American Art Independent Study Program, and the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago. From there, it turns to RAY Phoenix: the green facade, how the building responds to desert light, and the role of shade, landscape, art, and shared spaces in connecting it to Roosevelt Row. Johnston Marklee received the 2024 Richard Neutra Award for Professional Excellence, an honor previously given to Tadao Ando, Frank Gehry, Renzo Piano, and other world renowned architects.

Tickets available for purchase at Desert Design Week’s website. Limited complimentary tickets are available to Ray Phoenix residents available to reserve on the resident portal.

Sunday, October 11
Doors at 2pm, conversation from 2:30 to 4pm
Reception to follow with light bites and refreshments from kid sister
