Our Cruz Bay favorites, the things to do St. John first timers ask us about most, in the order you would hit them walking off the ferry in St John USVI. Start on the little beach by the dock, where the palms lean over the water and boats sit a few feet off the sand. Wharfside Watersports is right there if you want a dinghy for a St John boat day. High Tide is the spot for a drink next to the ocean, with the Beach Bar a short walk down the waterfront. Then head up into Mongoose Junction for the boutiques, Golden Hour, The St John Experience Gallery, Sun Dog Cafe, and Bajo el Sol. Put it all on your St John itinerary and the afternoon is covered. Any list of the best beaches Virgin Islands travelers put together starts with Trunk Bay, and this is the view that explains why. You sit down at the edge of the water, the sand is almost white, and the water goes from clear to pale turquoise to deep blue before it reaches the cays. Trunk Bay St. John sits inside Virgin Islands National Park, so there is a small entry fee, a St. John snorkeling trail you can swim straight off the beach, and nothing built along the shore. Get there early and you will have stretches of it to yourself. It is the one every guest asks about, and it still beats the photos. A full day at Tre Vista Estate, a Caribbean villa with private pool on the hillside above the water in St John USVI. It starts at the edge of the infinity pool with a glass of w**e and a bowl of citrus, looking across to St Thomas. The outdoor shower sits under palm fronds. Later you open the French doors to the balcony, stretch out on a mat by the pool, and watch the light change over the cove. This is the slow kind of Caribbean vacation you want to book a year ahead. A slow morning at Tre Vista Estate, St. John USVI— The Virgin Islands villa rental we keep coming back to when someone asks for peace and quiet. Two coffees on the petrified wood table, a straw hat on the chair, a Polaroid camera on the magazine nobody has opened yet. You carry your mug to the doorway and look out across the veranda. The window by the sofa frames the water and a strip of green hillside. Out past the bougainvillea the infinity pool is still, with St Thomas across the channel. Nobody is in a hurry today. No cuts, no edits, one continuous take from The Hills Villa St John. You open the French doors, step onto the balcony, and the whole of Cruz Bay opens up below you, with the ferries coming and going and St Thomas sitting on the horizon. The red tile roofs and the banana palms at the end are part of the property, and every room at The Hills St John faces this direction. When people ask about the best area to stay St John offers for a quick drive to town and a view like this, this hillside on St John in the USVI is our answer every time. Four St. John excursions, one guessing game. How many did you get right before the reveal? The first stop is a gallery tucked into Cruz Bay where the light comes through the windows just right. The second is a set of stone ruins above Maho Bay inside Virgin Islands National Park, with pink bougainvillea growing through the walls. Third is the sea turtle mural at Maho Crossroads, which is the easiest one on the list. The last one is the pool deck at The Hills St. John, where a hat, a book, and a bowl of citrus are waiting on the loungers. Island etiquette, part 2: save the beach clothes for the beach. On a caribbean vacation it feels normal to walk into a restaurant in a swimsuit and a cover up. Here it reads as rude. Wear a shirt, shorts or pants, and shoes anywhere that is not sand: restaurants, stores, walking through Cruz Bay, and on the ferry. Same rule on St. Thomas, if you are weighing St. John vs St. Thomas. It is the one line in a St. John travel guide that locals wish every visitor read before arriving. Pick your day on a Virgin Islands trip. Round one, the beach with the leaning palm or shopping in Cruz Bay. Round two, St. John snorkeling off the beach or the hike up to the ruins with the view over Maho Bay. Round three, a St. John boat day with the wake behind you or the pool at The Hills St. John with a book and nowhere to be.
