🔥 Know Your Heat—Before You Need It!
New England’s cold weather is coming! Do you know what heats your home and when it was last serviced?
🌬️ Furnace / Forced Hot Air
Heats air and sends it through ductwork. Check filters regularly, replace them according to the manufacturer’s instructions, and keep vents clear. Schedule professional service before heating season.
♨️ Boiler / Hot Water or Steam
Delivers heat through radiators, baseboards, or radiant floors. Schedule annual professional maintenance, keep heating surfaces clear, and have leaks or unusual noises checked.
🌡️ Heat Pumps / Mini-Splits
Provide heating and cooling. Clean filters as directed, keep outdoor units clear of leaves and snow buildup, and schedule professional maintenance.
⚡ Electric Baseboard
Uses electric heating elements in each room. Keep units clean and maintain the manufacturer’s required clearance from furniture, curtains, and bedding.
🪵 Wood / Pellet Stoves
Need regular ash removal and cleaning according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Have the stove, chimney, and venting inspected annually and cleaned as needed.
💡 Oil, propane, and natural gas describe the fuel—not the system! Oil, for example, can power either a furnace or a boiler.
✅ Test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.
✅ Keep service records together.
✅ Book maintenance before the first freezing night!
Buying a home? Ask about the heating system’s age, fuel source, service history, and fuel or electricity usage.
