Prince William County could finally be getting its long-awaited VRE train station.

Back in July 2014, former Governor Terry McAuliffe held a groundbreaking, promising this Potomac Shores stop by 2017. But 12 years later, commuters are still waiting.

Rail expansion, land transfers, and over $5 million in design work for the station and garage delayed the platforms for years.

Meanwhile, the developer already finished a $24 million parking garage with over 350 spaces and a 20,000-square-foot retail building leading toward the riverfront boardwalk. Those projects are already done, but the actual train platforms and passenger access still aren't built.

Now, clean soil tests just cleared a major hurdle, allowing VRE to move toward scheduling a public groundbreaking ceremony.

So does this mean trains are running soon?

Not quite yet. Previous projections targeted a 2026 start, but there's no contractor locked in yet and final paperwork remains. Still, after 12 years of waiting, this is the closest the project has ever been.
