Chimney Bluffs State Park looks like it was airlifted in from somewhere else entirely, tall clay spires and jagged pinnacles rising up along the Lake Ontario shoreline in Wayne County like something out of a badlands landscape a thousand miles from any Great Lake. 🪨 The formations are drumlins, hills of glacial till left behind by the last ice age, that wind, rain, and lake waves have been carving into sharp fins and spires for thousands of years.
Walking the Bluff Trail puts you right at the edge, with views straight down onto pinnacles rising up to 150 feet above the narrow beach below. The bluffs are still changing too, slowly eroding a little more with every storm that rolls off the lake, which means the exact shape you're looking at today won't be quite the same in another decade. Morning light works best here, raking low across the ridges and throwing deep shadows into every groove and fin.
It's one of those places that barely registers on most people's radar until they actually see a photo of it, and then it moves straight to the top of the list. 🌊
Have you been to Chimney Bluffs, and did the scale of it surprise you as much as it surprised us?
