As I am looking for walking areas for our community, I went to Lykins Park today to walk it. It is the largest of the parks in Clark County. Cross country meets have been held there so I knew there was some sort of path. It was being mowed while I was there. There is no actual path but there is a disc golf course and one can follow that. I parked at the bottom parking lot, crossed the bridge and walked the perimeter of the park. It’s nice there is farm land next to the park and a few shaded areas with patches of trees. You can take a dog 🐕 as long as it’s leashed (I doubled checked this with the director of Parks and Recreation)

This map from the Trust for Public Land website shows in green where the 11 "parks" are in Wi******er. I have marked off the Traveling Trail. The purple shows where parks are needed. Dark purple is "very high" need for parks. I will put the link in the comments, it's a great website to breakdown all the parks for size, who uses it, what percentage of people can walk to it in 10 minutes. Where do you think we could look for land to add a new trail? Please share your ideas!

Today we hiked the John Holder Trail at Lower Howard Creek which is a nature preserve that starts at Halls on the River. It’s a pretty trail that takes you down to the creek and then back up on the other side to a meadow where there are family cemeteries, lots of wild flowers and stone walls with old homestead remains. The trail has very limited hours, Tuesday and Thursday from 9-1 and the first Saturday of every month from 9-1 (unless it’s a holiday, so that takes out several Saturdays). I am not sure how far it was as there were no maps or markers indicating the length. Anyone know? It took us about 2 hours to do the out and back, taking our time to enjoy our surroundings. No dogs, fishing etc allowed since it is a preserve. I’ll add the website in the comments.

We are all saddened that our beloved tree has been destroyed. No attempt by the developers was made to try and keep it with their plans. The remaining trees are also gone today along with the homes for many animals, birds and insects. If this makes you unhappy you can do a google review of the GCF. They could have donated the land for the community but instead chose to sell it to developers. We all need to contact leaders in our community and stress to them that we need green space.

Today I went with a friend to try out the Civil War Fort Trail. I had seen the signs but always felt I needed to go with another person. The trail was much nicer than I expected. It starts out pretty steep on gravel for about 5 minutes of walking and then turns into a grass trail with a view of the river, wild flowers, a few picnic tables, a cannon and informational areas. The sign says .5. We walked it twice and it took about 30 min. For those looking for a non-concrete trail I recommended trying it out. A little bit of a drive, on the KY river on the Clark County side.

Siblings enjoying the beautiful chinkapin oak at the Traveling Trail. Publix, please don’t cut down this 500 year old tree when you develop this land. Please be creative and figure out a way to make this tree something to see. Make it a centerpiece for all to enjoy. Maybe the complex could even bear it’s name?

Tonight at the Traveling Trail, so many people walking, running, a little girl learning how to do cartwheels, a couple taking spring photos of their toddler, happy dogs and their owners walking on grass. We NEED GREENSPACE! People crave it! Please contact our mayor, ask her what is she doing to secure more areas like this one that we are losing. Contact the Greater Clark Foundation and ask them if they will be moving the trail. Let’s work together so our community can be healthier. 💕
