Wildwood’s city commission has proclaimed October 2026 as Monarch Awareness Month.

Last year, the City of Wildwood achieved Leadership Circle status through the National Wildlife Federation’s Mayor’s Monarch Pledge. Wildwood Mayor Ed Wolf shared this distinction with only three other mayors from Florida.
PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, the monarch butterfly is an iconic North American species whose multigenerational migration and metamorphosis from caterpillar to butterfly has captured the imagination of millions of Americans; and,
WHEREAS, both the western and eastern monarch populations have seen significant declines, with the former nearing record lows in the most recent counts; and,
WHEREAS, cities, towns, and counties have a critical role to play to help save the monarch butterfly, and the City of Wildwood is striving to become a leader in this effort; and,
WHEREAS, the City of Wildwood recognizes that 75%–95% of all flowering plants rely upon pollination to reproduce, and at least one-third of the food we eat is pollinator-dependent; and,
WHEREAS, the City of Wildwood recognizes that human health depends on well-functioning ecosystems and that biodiverse regions can better support food production, healthy soil, and air quality, and can foster healthy connections between humans and wildlife; and,
WHEREAS, the City of Wildwood has committed to projects and initiatives to enhance habitat for and encourage conservation of monarch butterflies and other pollinators; and,
WHEREAS, every resident of Wildwood can make a difference for the monarch by planting native milkweed and nectar plants to provide habitat in locations where people live, work, learn, play, and worship.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the City Commission of the City of Wildwood, Florida, that the month of October 2026 be, and is hereby proclaimed as
MONARCH AWARENESS MONTH
in Wildwood, Florida, and encourages all residents to participate in community activities that support and celebrate monarch conservation.
