Commercial Real Estate Powers U.S. Growth | Move With the Pros
It’s remarkable to see the real impact commercial real estate has on our country’s economy. A recent industry study shows that operating office, retail, and industrial properties across 79 U.S. markets generated around $610 billion in annual output and supported 3.9 million jobs. These properties—spanning 35.4 billion square feet across 38 states—drove about $275 billion in operating spending, contributed roughly $344 billion to GDP, and added nearly $219 billion in personal earnings.
What stands out to me as someone deeply involved in both residential and commercial real estate is how these buildings sustain local communities year after year. Even outside major metro areas, ongoing operations, maintenance, and improvements drive local jobs, businesses, and wages. The data from 2025 highlights interesting shifts: data centers made up about 46% of private office construction, traditional office construction totaled roughly $48.4 billion, and industrial activity remained strong. Early 2026 also brought a notable uptick in retail construction.
With my background in IT and market analysis, I’m especially interested in how technology is helping property owners and managers supervise energy, water, security, access, and building performance. As commercial real estate continues to evolve, staying ahead of these trends is key to making smart decisions—whether you’re investing, developing, or managing property.
