Comuna 13 hits different once you know what it used to be. Back in the early 2000s this was one of the most dangerous places on earth, caught in the middle of gangs, guerrillas, and paramilitaries all fighting over the hillside. In 2002 the government sent in the military for Operation Orion to retake it, and the scars from that are still part of the story people tell you here. What actually turned things around wasnā€™t a police operation though, it was the community itself. Kids who grew up in the middle of that violence picked up spray cans and turntables instead of guns, and hip hop and graffiti became the way this neighborhood rebuilt its identity. Then in 2011 the city built outdoor escalators up the hillside so people didnā€™t have to climb 350 steps just to get home, and thatā€™s when the whole world started paying attention.

Walked those same escalators today, past murals painted by the people who actually lived this history, past kids breakdancing for tips who are better than anyone Iā€™ve seen in a club. This neighborhood went from a no go zone to one of the most talked about art districts in South America, and they did it themselves. Wildly humbling to walk through
