If you are buying in Maple Grove with a dog or a bike, start with Elm Creek Park Reserve. It covers 4,900 acres, almost 5,000, and it is the largest park in the largest park system in the Twin Cities, so it is the biggest of the biggest. You get about 20 miles of paved trails, almost 13 miles of mountain bike single track and a swimming pond with a sand beach in the summer. In the winter there is a tubing hill that stands over 10 stories tall with 12 different lanes, and it is so cool. A house built in 1854 sits inside the park too, and I share its story at the end of the clip. The clip comes from my video on the pros and cons of living in Maple Grove.

Dog, bike or tubing hill: which would you try first?

New construction can be great, and there is one thing I want every Maple Grove buyer to think through first. Some neighborhoods here still have builders actively selling new homes. If you buy in one of them and need to sell in three or four years, your house competes with the builder's brand new model across the street, backed by incentives you simply can't match. It is a resale problem a lot of buyers don't see coming. I will still help you buy new construction if you love it, and I ask you to be intentional about how long you plan to stay. A lot of newer Maple Grove neighborhoods and most townhome communities also have an HOA, and I share my advice on the documents and the budget. The clip comes from my video on the pros and cons of living in Maple Grove.

Would you buy in a neighborhood where the builder is still selling?

If you hate being cold, and I am using that word intentionally, Minnesota will ask a lot of you for five months of the year. Minus 5 with no wind chill is a beautiful morning. Minus 5 with wind is a decision, your eyelashes freeze, and you come home with a bright red face second guessing all of your decisions. If you can get used to it, there is a version of winter where you find joy in the madness, standing on a frozen bay in February and watching 2,000 people play golf on the lake. Yes, you heard that right. I share what it is called and why I think it is one of the best parties in the state. The clip comes from my video on 10 reasons you might not want to move to Minnesota.

Minnesotans cannot merge to save their lives, and I say that with love. The Minnesota Department of Transportation runs a public campaign every summer trying to teach us the zipper merge, and the state has posted signs too, but the signs are losing. I also share a piece of advice I often give about where to live in relation to your job, because the highways here were built to get you downtown and back out, and there is no direct freeway route from the Northeast Metro to the Southwest Metro. The clip comes from my video on 10 reasons you might not want to move to Minnesota.

Do you zipper merge, or do you block the open lane?

Minnesota Nice is real, and I think it shows up differently than people expect. People will hold the door, wave to you in traffic and even help you push your car out of a snowbank, and I have done that last one myself. Then they head home to friends they have had since kindergarten, so the game night invite may never come. It is really not personal, because Minnesotans who have been here forever have had their friend group for years and go to the same places and do the same things. I share what I recommend if you move here and want to meet people. The clip comes from my video on 10 reasons you might not want to move to Minnesota.

What helped you make friends after your last move?

When people think about moving to Minnesota, they think about the winter, so I put real numbers on it in a short clip. About 22 days a year the low sits at or below zero on the thermometer, and winter runs from November through April, with some years stretching into May and June. In 2019 the wind chill at the airport hit minus 55, which is 15 past the point where Celsius and Fahrenheit give up and read the same number. Schools in Minneapolis and across much of the state shut down in cold like that, and I share the wind chill number that still counts as a school day. The clip comes from my video on 10 reasons you might not want to move to Minnesota.

How cold is too cold for you?

Remember the big yellow metal Tonka trucks every kid used to wreck a sandbox with? They started right here in Mound in 1946, at a company called Mound Metalcraft that made gardening tools out of an old schoolhouse. The name comes from the Dakota word for great or big, the same Tonka as in Minnetonka, and the early logo even had waves and seagulls on it.

My favorite weird lake fact is close by too. Lake Minnetonka Regional Park has a swimming pond right next to the lake, and it is filled with lake water that has been filtered and chlorinated. We love the lake, and we also like to know what is in it.

If you know one thing about Lake Minnetonka from pop culture, it is probably the Prince line about purifying yourself in its waters. That famous scene was filmed about an hour from the lake, and the real Prince connection is right here in Chanhassen at Paisley Park, his home and studio.

Chanhassen and Victoria make up a big part of the west side of the metro, with newer neighborhoods and plenty of parks. Living near Paisley Park also gives you a great line for the relatives back in California every Thanksgiving.

Lake Minnetonka covers more than 14,000 acres with about 125 miles of shoreline, and its deepest spot is around 113 feet. It is really a bunch of bays and channels holding hands, which makes counting them harder than you would think. One source says about 23 named bays, another says 37, and someone very confident will tell you 42.

The bay you are on matters even more than the count. Some bays are glassy and quiet at sunrise, and some are where every big boat in the county shows up on a Saturday in July, so the same lake can give you a completely different summer.

Around 1905, you could ride a streetcar from downtown Minneapolis all the way to Excelsior, step off at the lake, and climb onto a bright yellow boat for a dime. The streetcar company ran those boats itself, and everyone called them streetcar boats.

In 1926, three of them were sunk on purpose. The official word is scuttled, but I think sunk is more fun, and it was a very Minnesota way to handle it because nobody wanted to make a fuss. Then in 1980, divers brought one of them back up.
