A proposed amendment on the November 3, 2026 ballot could bring one of the biggest property tax changes in Florida history.

If approved by at least 60% of voters, the proposal would:
✅ Increase the homestead exemption from $50,000 to $150,000 beginning January 1, 2027.
✅ Increase it again to $250,000 on January 1, 2028, with future inflation adjustments.
✅ Establish a framework for the potential long-term elimination of non-school homestead property taxes.

According to Governor Ron DeSantis, this proposal could eventually reduce property tax bills to zero for many Florida homeowners who qualify.

A few important notes:
• The proposal applies to non-school property taxes only.
• New Florida residents after January 1, 2027, would need to meet a five-year residency requirement to qualify for the full enhanced exemption.

Whether you're already a homeowner or considering purchasing a home, this is a proposal worth following. Homeownership continues to offer unique financial benefits that renters simply don't receive.
