🎁 What's on a business owner's holiday wish list?

Forget the socks and scented candles! 🤣

When you own a business, sometimes the best gifts are the things that make your workday a little easier.

Here are a few things we'd put on a business owner's holiday wish list:

💻 **Technology that saves time.** A faster computer, an extra monitor, or software that eliminates repetitive tasks.

☕ **A more comfortable workspace.** An ergonomic chair, a better desk setup, or even that fancy espresso machine you've been eyeing!

📚 **Professional development.** A course, conference, or membership that helps you build your skills and grow your business.

⏰ **The gift of time.** Delegating tasks that keep you from focusing on what you do best.

📊 **Financial clarity.** Accurate, organized bookkeeping that helps you understand where your business stands.

Here's our Money Mindset Monday reminder:

**The best investment isn't always something you can wrap in a box. Sometimes it's something that gives you back your time, energy, or peace of mind.**

Now we're curious!

👇 If you could put ONE thing on your business holiday wish list, what would it be?

💰 Business expenses: What should stay, and what should go in 2027?

As you prepare your budget for the new year, here's a question worth asking:

Is every dollar you're spending helping your business move forward?

It's easy for expenses to become part of the routine. Software subscriptions renew, services continue, and small monthly charges add up without anyone stopping to evaluate their value.

But cutting expenses isn't always the answer. Sometimes an expense that looks unnecessary on paper is actually saving you time, improving efficiency, or helping you serve your customers better.

Before deciding what stays and what goes, ask yourself:

✅ Does this expense support our business goals?
✅ Are we getting enough value for what we're paying?
✅ Is there a more efficient or cost-effective alternative?
✅ Would eliminating it create more work or problems?

💡 The goal isn't to spend less at every opportunity. It's to spend intentionally.

A thoughtful expense review now can help you build a stronger, more realistic budget for 2027.

What's one business expense you've reconsidered this year?

🤔 Can you change an employee to an independent contractor?

**Short answer: It's not for you to decide!**

You can't simply change someone's job title, stop running payroll, and start issuing a 1099 because it's more convenient or costs your business less money.

The IRS has specific guidelines for determining whether a worker is an employee or an independent contractor.

Here are three areas to consider:

🔹 **Behavioral Control:** Does your business control how, when, and where the work gets done?

🔹 **Financial Control:** Who provides the equipment? Does the worker have an opportunity for profit or loss? Can they offer their services to other businesses?

🔹 **Relationship:** Are benefits provided? Is the relationship ongoing? Is the work a key part of your business?

⚠️ **Here's what's important:** Calling someone a contractor, having them sign an agreement, or paying them without withholding taxes doesn't automatically make them an independent contractor.

Misclassifying workers can result in back payroll taxes, penalties, and other consequences.

If you're considering changing someone's classification, consult a qualified payroll or tax professional before making the change.

**The nature of the working relationship determines the classification, not the label you give it.**

📊 Are you tracking the RIGHT financial ratios for your business?

Your financial statements tell you what happened. Financial ratios help you understand what those numbers actually mean.

But here's something many business owners don't realize: Not every financial ratio is equally important for every business!

🍽️ **Restaurant owners:** Food cost percentage and labor cost percentage can reveal whether rising expenses are eating into profits.

🔨 **Contractors and trades:** Gross profit margin helps you understand how much revenue remains after covering the direct costs of completing your jobs.

🏡 **Real estate professionals:** Net profit margin can help you see how much of your revenue you're actually keeping after expenses.

And regardless of your industry, understanding your current ratio can help you evaluate your ability to cover short-term obligations.

The goal isn't to track every financial ratio available. It's to identify the ones that matter most to YOUR business and monitor them consistently.

💡 When you understand your numbers, you can make better decisions about pricing, spending, and growth.

Are you tracking the financial ratios that matter most to your business?

🍂 Hello, November!

A new month means a fresh page, and we’re officially heading into the final stretch of 2026.

November can get busy quickly. Year-end plans start taking shape, holiday schedules fill the calendar, and before we know it, December is knocking on the door.

For business owners, this is a great time to slow down just long enough to look at where things stand.

Are your books current?
Do you know how your business has performed so far this year?
Are there any loose ends you want tied up before year-end?

There’s still time to finish the year strong without waiting until December to figure it all out.

Here’s to a productive November, a little gratitude along the way, and maybe even a few moments to enjoy the view. 🍁

⏰ It's time to FALL BACK!

Daylight Saving Time ends today, Sunday, November 1, at 2:00 AM.

That means we get an extra hour! 🍂☕

Whether you use it to catch up on sleep, enjoy another cup of coffee, or tackle something on your to-do list, make the most of it!

And don't forget to change those clocks that don't update automatically.

How are you spending your extra hour today? 😴☕🍁

We've spent all month talking about numbers, bookkeeping, and getting ready for year-end.

But today? We're trading spreadsheets for sweet treats! 🍫🍬

And since we're bookkeepers, we have to ask...

Does Halloween candy count as an office supply if it helps us get through month-end? 🤔😂

Asking for a friend, of course! 😉

Wishing everyone a safe, fun, and SPOOK-tacular Halloween! 🎃👻🦇

Now for the important question...

Are you Team Chocolate 🍫 or Team Fruity Candy 🍭?

🎃 **What's scarier than a haunted house?**

Opening your bookkeeping software in December and realizing you haven't reconciled your accounts since March! 😱😂

As we head into the final stretch of the year, there are plenty of tasks that can make a business owner's hair stand on end.

👻 Tracking down missing W-9s.

🧟 Sorting out payroll discrepancies.

🕸️ Untangling months of bookkeeping.

💀 Getting everything organized for your tax professional.

But here's the good news...

**You don't have to tackle every scary task yourself!**

Delegating isn't admitting defeat. It's recognizing that your time is valuable and that having the right professionals in your corner can make a world of difference.

At A Better Business Solution, we help take the fright out of your financial records so you can focus on running your business.

Now tell us...

**What's the scariest task lurking on YOUR business to-do list?** 👀🎃

🚨 **Business owners, there's a BIG change for 1099 reporting in 2026!**

After years of the $600 reporting threshold, the IRS has increased it to **$2,000 for qualifying payments made in 2026.** 🎉

That means if you've paid an independent contractor $2,000 or more for qualifying services during 2026, you generally need to issue Form 1099-NEC.

But don't let the higher threshold fool you into thinking there's less preparation to do!

Now is the time to:

✅ Review payments made to independent contractors.

✅ Make sure you have completed W-9 forms on file.

✅ Verify names, addresses, and tax identification numbers.

✅ Identify which vendors may require a 1099.

✅ Resolve missing information BEFORE January arrives.

And please, for the love of bookkeeping, **don't wait until January to start chasing down W-9s!** 😂

A little preparation now makes 1099 season a whole lot easier.

📊 Your Revenue Doesn't Tell the Whole Story!

💰 **Your business brought in $100,000. Congratulations! But how much did you actually KEEP?**

That's the question too many business owners forget to ask.

Revenue is exciting. Watching sales increase feels great! 🎉

But growing revenue doesn't automatically mean your business is becoming more profitable.

That's why understanding your financial metrics matters.

📊 Are your expenses growing faster than your sales?

💵 Do you have enough cash available to cover upcoming obligations?

📈 Are your profit margins improving or shrinking?

🧾 How much money is sitting in unpaid customer invoices?

These numbers tell a much bigger story about the health of your business than revenue alone.

**And here's the part we really want business owners to understand:**

You don't need to become an accountant to understand your finances.

You DO need to know which numbers matter, what they're telling you, and when it's time to make adjustments.

Because financial reports shouldn't just tell you what happened last month.

**They should help you decide what to do NEXT.** 💙

👉 Swipe through for five financial metrics every small business owner should understand.

Which number do you pay the most attention to in your business?
