Behind the cobwebs, questionable lighting, and that one noise in the corner, there are a few things worth paying attention to when touring a basement.
Here's what I look for:
1. Water stains or discoloration on walls and ceilings. Even if everything feels dry today, there may have been a past leak.
2. Musty smells. That damp, earthy smell can be a clue to moisture issues or possible mold.
3. Cracks in the foundation. Not every crack is a major concern, but large, widening, or stair-step cracks deserve a closer look.
4. Efflorescence. That white, powdery residue on masonry can indicate moisture moving through the wall.
5. Signs of previous repairs. Fresh paint on one suspicious patch? I'll be curious about what’s underneath.
A creepy basement isn't bad. A lot of homes have them. But it's worth knowing what you're looking at before you fall in love with the rest of the house.
