Heather Johnson Realtor at ReMax Rising Bloomington-Normal's Native Real Estate Agent, Passionate Buyer Agent, Home Selling Champion What sets me apart is my commitment to education and advocacy.

As a Realtor, I'm a proud wife to a skilled Union electrician and a mom/bonus mom to four teenagers (plus two dogs and a cat who's convinced she's part of the canine club). I've mastered the art of juggling multiple priorities while maintaining attention to detail. This skill proves invaluable in managing complex real estate transactions. With deep roots in Bloomington-Normal spanning my entire life, I've had the unique opportunity to witness our community's growth and evolution firsthand. Since earning my real estate license in 2016, I've combined my local expertise with a passion for helping people navigate one of life's biggest decisions. My approach to real estate is deeply influenced by my hands-on experience in home renovation. Currently building out our retirement home and having completed numerous remodeling projects, I bring practical knowledge that goes beyond typical real estate expertise. From framing to understanding the basics of electrical and plumbing work (though I leave those specialties to my husband and father-in-law, the true Union professionals), I can spot potential issues that others might miss during home tours and inspections. I take particular pride in working with first-time homebuyers and seniors, breaking down complex processes into manageable steps. My communication style is refreshingly direct – I believe in honest, unbiased advice that helps clients make informed decisions. It's particularly rewarding when clients tell me, "You've made this so much easier than last time." Having children in both Unit 5 and District 87 schools has given me comprehensive insight into our local education system – knowledge that proves invaluable to families relocating to the area. I understand that buying or selling a home doesn't happen in isolation from family life, which is why I understand if your kids need to tag along. My commitment to the Bloomington-Normal community extends beyond real estate transactions. I believe in giving back to the place that has given me so much, and I strive to make our community stronger through each client relationship I build. Remember, when you work with me, you're not just getting a realtor – you're getting a neighbor who understands the local market, a professional who can spot potential issues before they become problems, and someone who truly cares about helping you make the right decision for your family's future. Let's work together to make your real estate journey smoother, more informed, and maybe even a little fun along the way!

If you haven't heard of Nick Hibbs or Sabraina Bolatto, or Hometown Senior Care Advisors, now you have. They are phenomenal people and are such a wealth of information for our aging population. Not only can they direct you to the best senior facility, but they can tell you the questions to ask, what to look for, OR, help you figure out how you can stay in your home longer (kinda like me but different).

7 World Trade Center collapses...

The last to fall... but the images kept coming.

Everyone was the same color. Covered in ash, they just helped each other.

I remember compassion.

10:28 a.m.

In less than 15 seconds, 102 minutes after it was hit, the North Tower collapsed.

I think this was when I called a friend of mine, Ben.

When I picked up the phone, I remembered being at his house just a few days earlier with some coworkers. There was a Slip ’N Slide in the yard, and we were just having fun. We were in our early 20s. Sure, we were technically adults, but still just big kids.

Ben and his roommate were both in the military reserves.

The reality of what was happening, how one minute changed our lives, hit me.

Just days earlier, we had been carefree college kids.

One moment catapulted us into adulthood.

Ben and his roommate could be called to war...maybe even that day.

I asked if he was okay. If he knew whether he would have to leave.

He didn’t know.

10:03 am.

The final plane went down in a Pennsylvania field.

Why a field? What was there?

We would later learn that hero's were there.

We would learn about the flight attendants, Lorraine Bay, Sandra Bradshaw, Wanda Green, CeeCee Lyles, and Deborah Welsh, who relayed information to the ground, threw boiling water on the hijackers, and helped the passengers form a counter-attack.

We would learn about the pilots, Captain Jason Dahl and First Officer LeRoy Homer Jr, who resisted as best they could.

We would learn about Mark Bingham and Jeremy G***k, who worked with Tom Burnett Jr. and Todd Beamer to storm the cockpit and try to take control of the plane back.

We would learn of the bone-chilling calls that Tom made to his wife.

We would learn of his final call to her: "We're waiting until we're over a rural area. We're going to take back the airplane," and when she begged him not to do what he and other passengers intended, we learned that she begged him not to, but instead, he responded with, "If they're going to crash this plane, we're going to have to do something... It's up to us".

And we learned that his last words to her were, "Don't worry. We're going to do something".

And we learned of Todd Beemer's words, "Let's roll," which would be branded on our souls.

And we later learned that those heroes likely saved countless lives at the White House.

9:59 am.

The second tower that got hit started to topple.

I had been glued to the TV, but I don't have this distinct memory.

I didn't watch it collapse.

I remember sitting, tears streaming down my face, absently hearing them hit the floor.

I remember heartache for everyone on board, their families, their friends.
I remember confusion and fear.

I didn't see it.
I don't remember when I heard about it.
I was in a fog.
But another plane had hit the Pentagon.

Without a doubt, our country was under attack.

I remember.

I got out of bed and went down to the living room.

Dad was on the couch.

The TV was playing live footage of smoke billowing out of the top of the first tower of the World Trade Center.

I pulled the ottoman over and sat down. He told me an airplaine had hit the tower. At that time, I think I assumed it was a small personal airplane that lost control.

As I sat watching the TV, trying to understand what could have happened, Dad and I watched a blur come in from the left side of the screen, followed by a fireball.

"Was that another one!?"

It was. Dad and I watched but the world stopped. That was at 9:03 am.

I was asleep.

My dad woke me up, "Heather, there's some s**t going down, you need to get up."

Even though no one had said it, he knew something wasn't right when he was watching TV and saw that a plane had hit the World Trade Center.
