Ghost Town Ruby, Arizona

Ruby, Arizona is on of the best-preserved ghost towns in the American Southwest, located in Santa Cruz County about 50 miles south of Tucson!

Spanish prospectors first explored the area in the 1700’s, naming the region Oro Blanco (white gold) in search of gold and silver. A shift to lead, zinc and silver was caused by WW1, becoming Arizona’s leading producer of lead and zinc.

Ruby experienced significant frontier violence and lawlessness. Between 1920 & 1922, a series of three murders occurred involving store owners & local figures, triggering one of the largest manhunts in the southwest, notable for marking the first time an airplane was used in an Arizona law enforcement manhunt.

By the mid-1930’s, the town had a population of about 1,200 residents, a school, a hospital, and a post office. Eventually the rich ore deposits ran out and the town was completely abandoned by the end of 1941.

Pioneer Pete Kitchen – Known For His Defenses Against Bandits & Apache Indians

Pete was born in Kentucky and moved to Tubac AZ in 1854. He established the Potrero Ranch, considered to be the only “safe haven” stronghold between Tucson & Magdalena Mexico. Located on a hill with a commanding view in all directions, his ranch house became an adobe fortress. He was a crack shot with a r***e, also raised and sold prized hogs. A fascinating character! Books about him have been written by Gil Procter and can be found online.

The Rocking Chair That Rocks By Itself In The Middle Of The Night at Hotel Gadsden

We had dinner one night with the Gadsden manager who told us about the rocking chair that rocks by itself in the middle of the night. We asked if we could see it. The hotel room was not occupied so we were able to sit in the rocker, and take pictures of it!
