Baltimore County Executive Kathy Klausmeier is asking the county council to sign off on supporting a key part of the controversial Lutherville Station development. It’s a clear indication that the project is moving forward.

Klausmeier backs a “transit oriented development” designation for the project. The development plan has not yet been filed but it is expected to be a mix of apartments, restaurants and businesses.

During the recent Baltimore County Executive Candidate Forum, candidates discussed transit-oriented development projects.

Patoka and Jones spoke heavily about transit-oriented development of metro stations, specifically at Lutherville Station. Patoka called it a “strong project” and said there are also great opportunities for housing initiatives at places like the Milford Mill metro station and the Old Court metro station.

Patoka, Stansbury, Daniels and Stewart all talked about major reform in permitting, approvals and inspections.

“On top of all this, we have to push back against NIMBYism and other ‘isms’ that keeps us from having the dialogues of one another that unlock prosperity in this county,” Stewart said. Mansoor echoed that statement.

Seven candidates for Baltimore County Executive discussed the county's need for housing, economic growth, and other issues on voters' minds during a forum Wednesday at Goucher College in Towson.

“I really think it’s a good idea for everybody to sit down and try to work out the issues," said Councilman Wade Kach, reflecting on Lutherville Station. "The building sits there deteriorating. I don’t think it’s a positive thing for the community at all.”

The owner of the commercial shopping center next to the Lutherville light rail stop is pledging to continue to work to add housing there, despite intense community opposition and resistance from the County Council.

The problem of school overcrowding in Baltimore County isnʼt lack of capacity, itʼs a failure to take reasonable measures, including redrawing school district lines to properly proportion students to schools. The council has to get serious about incentivizing affordable housing that is served adequately not
only by schools but by transit and other essential services.

Baltimore County Council needs to take more serious action on school overcrowding and a lack of affordable housing than what it appears poised to do.
