What you’re seeing here is a perfect example of why you can’t judge a home’s structural condition by appearances alone.
During a recent inspection, we discovered extensive powder post beetle and rot damage throughout several structural beams and floor joists. The homeowner had attempted to reinforce the damaged areas with additional framing and supports, but unfortunately, much of the work was improperly installed and failed to adequately address the underlying concerns.
New lumber doesn’t automatically mean a problem has been fixed.
As home inspectors, our job is to look beyond what’s visible at first glance, recognize questionable workmanship, and identify conditions that could lead to costly repairs down the road.
