Fern & Timber is an adorable and open, freshly-built log cabin tucked into the trees outside Murphy, North Carolina.

The back deck is your spot for dusk: dinner on the grill, the fire table glowing as the sun drops behind the trees. Inside, there's a gas fireplace, a Keurig for the morning, and room for four across two bedrooms.

Bring the dog. This place is dog friendly, not just dog allowed, and $75 covers the pet cleaning fee for your whole stay.

Three lakes within 45 minutes: Chatuge, Hiwassee, and Nottely. I recommend Nottely, with its 100 miles of shoreline, two marinas, and a county park with a white sand beach... but all three have much to offer.

We have a winner!

The answer is C) About 20,000 calories! During hyperphagia, a black bear can eat around 20,000 calories in a single day. That’s about ten times what most of us eat. Acorns, berries, nuts, whatever they can find before the long winter nap.
