Such an interesting piece of history that began right here in St. Louis! This Supreme Court case helped change the landscape for all home buyers, making access to housing fairer for all.

As a Realtor, I firmly believe that ALL people deserve access to housing and a chance at the American dream of homeownership. 🇺🇸🏡

There is an ordinary brick house on Labadie Avenue that helped change the whole country. 🏠 You could walk right past it and never guess that a family's fight to live there reached the Supreme Court.

In 1945 the Shelleys, a Black family, bought that home, not knowing it carried a decades-old racial covenant meant to keep Black families out. When a neighbor sued to force them from the house, the case became Shelley v. Kraemer, and in 1948 the Supreme Court ruled that courts could not enforce those racist covenants. It was a landmark victory that cracked open segregated neighborhoods across America, and it started right here in St. Louis.

The Shelley House still stands today as a National Historic Landmark. It is proof that some of the bravest history happens not in grand halls but in a modest home where a family simply refused to leave. ✊

Congratulations to my buyers on the purchase of their new home in Kirkwood! This amazing couple was referred to me by a family member/past client and moving here from out-of-state.
