Things to Do: A Parker County Fall Loop
A 30-foot waterfall hides behind a fence on West Lee Avenue in Weatherford. It’s part of Chandor Gardens, a 3.5-acre retreat created in 1936 by British-born portrait painter Douglas Chandor.
Originally called White Shadows, the garden blends formal English design with Chinese architectural elements.
After Douglas died in 1953, his wife, Ina, renamed the property Chandor Gardens and kept it open to the public. Following her death in 1978, the grounds became overgrown for 16 years until Melody and Chuck Bradford began restoring them in 1994. The City of Weatherford purchased the gardens in 2002, preserving this distinctive local landmark. Admission is $5 for visitors over 12; children 12 and under are free.
Clark Gardens Botanical Park offers another outdoor escape, with October pumpkin displays, family activities, photo spots, and its annual Quilts in the Garden event. Handcrafted quilts line the walking paths, adding a seasonal touch to the fall color.
The Doss Heritage and Culture Center opened in 2006 after Parker County’s history collection outgrew a single room in the Weatherford Public Library. Its 20th Anniversary Exhibit celebrates two decades of local stories, photographs, and artifacts. Permanent galleries explore early Texas settlements, cattle drives, Native American life in Parker County, and Weatherford-connected performers Mary Martin and Larry Hagman. General admission is free; guided tours cost $5.
Together, these destinations make a memorable fall outing for anyone exploring Weatherford and Parker County. The timing is especially notable: the Doss marks 20 years, Clark Gardens brings seasonal traditions to its paths, and Chandor’s water features and stonework offer a peaceful change of pace.
