This gutter never stood a chance.

A tiny gutter made from flimsy material, installed right in a roof valley where all that water comes rushing down. It’s barely hanging on—and it was never going to handle the job. Let’s put it out of its misery and replace it with something built for the flow.

Why don’t we see this everywhere?

I’ve seen Maxwell Air’s gasket-style flashing for wall penetrations at trade shows for years, but this is the first time I’ve seen it installed on an actual home. It’s a simple, purpose-made way to flash around wall penetrations. Honestly, I’m surprised it hasn’t caught on more. Maxell Corporation of America

The attic water heater outrage is back.

In Texas, attic water heaters are common in slab-on-grade homes where basements aren’t typical. The location alone doesn’t make one unsafe—but proper access, venting, leak protection, and maintenance matter. A pan and properly routed drain can help limit damage if a leak happens.

So yes, the concerns deserve attention. No, every attic water heater isn’t a ticking time bomb. That’s what inspections are for.

Did this material just get left to rot?

Some leftover material on a job site is expected. But quality lumber sitting outside long enough to deteriorate because it wasn’t used? That’s a pretty expensive way to decorate the yard. Materials should be stored properly and protected from moisture until they’re needed.

This is why we check the attic.

Attic water heaters are common in Texas—but this one had a serious problem: a separated exhaust flue. If combustion gases aren’t properly vented outdoors, carbon monoxide could enter the attic and potentially reach the living space.

The attic definitely shouldn’t be collecting exhaust gases. This safety concern needs prompt evaluation and repair.
