“New beginnings.”

Those are the words Mrs. Sherry says came to her as she evacuated her neighborhood.

When she sat down with Kevin and me, she shared how her faith is helping her look ahead after losing her home to wildfire here in Spokane. She spoke about her family, the weight of possessions, and wanting to be a good steward of what comes next.

We wrapped up our week at Housing Washington by bringing Spokane’s work to advance Black homeownership into a room of about 65 legislators, community members, CEOs, and executive directors.

I was honored to share the stage with Jackie Chauncey Jones, Milton, and Colleen as partners with the Black Homeownership Spokane coalition. We spoke about the state of Black homeownership, the progress we’re working toward, and the work happening in our community.

I’m leaving this week grateful for the relationships we’ve built and the new partnerships taking shape. I look forward to turning those connections into opportunities for more Black families to become homeowners.

Today I sat down with Kevin Dailey, cofounder, building designer, and estimator at .

Kevin brings 20 years of industry experience and is part of a team helping families in Pasadena and Altadena rebuild after devastating fires. He is currently visiting Washington to learn more about the communities affected by our recent fires and explore how his team’s experience and alternative construction methods could help families here.

We also had the opportunity to speak with Miss Sherry, a longtime Spokane resident whose home was lost in the fire. Hearing her story was a reminder that rebuilding begins with listening to the people who have actually lived through the loss.

I am grateful for the conversation and look forward to sharing more from my interview with Kevin soon.
