This week on āSpot the Defectā - Don't Forget These Often Overlooked Winter Maintenance Tasks!
Winter is just around the corner, and while most of us are focused on staying warm, there are a few things around the house that are easy to overlook! Taking care of these now can help prevent costly repairs down the road.
Here are a few things to add to your winter home maintenance checklist:
1. Check Your Attic Ventilation & Insulation
Proper insulation and ventilation can help reduce heat loss, moisture buildup, and the risk of ice dams forming on your roof.
2. Keep an Eye Out for Water Leaks
Check under sinks, around plumbing fixtures, in the basement, and near your water heater. Small leaks can go unnoticed and lead to bigger problems over time.
3. Inspect Your Foundation & Basement
Look for cracks, signs of moisture, or water intrusion. Winter weather can make existing issues worse, and catching them early can save you headaches later.
4. Don't Forget About Termites & Wood-Destroying Insects
Just because it's cold outside doesn't mean your home is automatically safe from wood-destroying insects. Termites can remain active inside a structure year-round, so keep an eye out for signs of damage or activity!
5. Test Your Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Detectors
With heating systems running more often and windows staying closed, working detectors are especially important during the winter months.
6. Check Windows & Doors for Drafts
Worn weatherstripping and gaps around openings can let cold air in and warm air out, making your heating system work harder.
7. Test Your Home for Radon
With windows closed and homes sealed up for winter, it's a great time to consider radon measurement. Radon is an invisible, odorless gas that can accumulate inside homes, and testing is the only way to know your home's level.
8. Inspect Your Exterior Vents
Make sure dryer vents, exhaust vents, and other openings are clear of snow, ice, and debris. Blocked vents can create safety and moisture concerns.
A little maintenance now can help prevent bigger problems later!
