A few fall habits now can mean fewer surprises this winter.
Whether you just closed on a home or have lived there for years, a quick walk around the house this month is worth the time. You are not doing a full inspection. You are just checking the basics before the cold sets in.
Worth checking this fall:
• Gutters and downspouts: Clear out the leaves, and make sure the downspouts carry water away from the foundation.
• Grading and drainage: Soil and mulch should slope away from the house. Water that collects near the foundation may deserve a closer look.
• Heating system: If it hasn’t been serviced in a while, fall is a good time to schedule it, before the busy season.
• Outdoor faucets: Disconnect garden hoses. If your home has an indoor shutoff for the outdoor faucets, close it and drain the line.
Have a well or septic system? Keep the well cap easy to reach, and it can help to mark where the septic cover is before snow hides it. Try to keep cars and heavy equipment off the septic area, too.
Put a reminder on your calendar and make it a fall habit.
Agents, feel free to share this with your buyers and past clients.
