Just steps from the downtown shops in Seward, Alaska, we found ourselves watching an eagle along the waterfront. 🦅

Don’t miss this hidden piece of Seward’s history.

Tucked along Resurrection Bay, near the waterfront campground, you can spot remnants of the old docks lost during the devastating 1964 Alaska earthquake.

On March 27, 1964, a magnitude 9.2 earthquake shook Alaska. Along Seward’s waterfront, the ground itself slid into the bay, taking docks and harbor facilities with it. Tsunami waves brought even more destruction. The waterfront you see today was rebuilt after that disaster. These remnants are a quiet reminder of the day the shoreline changed forever.

The Harding Icefield Trail is no small adventure — 8 miles, 3,500 feet of elevation gain, and 6–8 hours of hiking. Strenuous for good reason.

After 4 hours of climbing, you’ve reached the view you came for. And then you turn around. 😭💜

Because somehow, the mountains you just climbed are just as breathtaking as the destination itself.

🥾 A few trail tips before you go:
• Bring trekking poles — your knees will thank you!
• Pack plenty of water and snacks.
• Expect cold, windy conditions near the top, even if it’s warm below.
• Wear sturdy hiking shoes with good traction for snow.
• Bring bear spray or an air horn for wildlife safety.
• Plan ahead for bathroom breaks — there are no restrooms along the trail.
