Thank you to Emma Hamilton WJCL for having our very own Suzanne Willis on to talk about Empty Bowl!

This Sunday, come grab a bowl of soup for a good cause. Empty Bowl is happening November 1 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Reynolds Square. Every bowl supports the Emmaus House Resource Center, where nearly 200 neighbors a day get meals, medical care, counseling, case management, workforce training, dignity services and help finding housing.

Our culinary team is cooking up soup, and we’re joined by The Olde Pink House, Collins Quarter, The Sentient Bean and Leopold’s Ice Cream. Pick out a handcrafted ceramic bowl to take home, grab a tote, and enjoy live harp music from Kristen King.

Want to see where your support goes? Join us after the event for a tour of the Emmaus House Resource Center at 127 Fahm St. The tour starts at 1:30 p.m., and parking is available.

We hope to see you Sunday.

Halloween is tomorrow, and our programs got into the spirit early 🎃

This week they competed in a pumpkin decorating contest with a scary movie theme. The talent (and the creepiness) across our teams was impressive 👻

Which one is your favorite? Let us know in the comments. Happy Halloween from all of us at Union Mission!

To close out Domestic Violence Awareness Month, meet Stella.

Stella’s story starts when she was nine months old. That’s when her mother lost her life to domestic violence. Years later, Stella found herself in an abusive relationship of her own. When her partner hit her in the head with an object, she left that same day.

“If my mom had been able to leave, maybe she would still be here today. And I didn’t want to turn into her.”

Stella came to Parker's House. While she was there, she took empowerment classes with Dr. Karen Alston of 4 the Jewel N U Global, Inc and worked with a therapist who kept finding her new places to apply. On her 90th day, she moved into her own apartment.

“I didn’t know that from this situation, I would blossom the way that I did.”

Thank you to Stella, Amanda, Anna and Koa for trusting us with their stories this month.

Week three of our Domestic Violence Awareness Month series. Meet Koa.

Koa grew up surrounded by trauma that went back generations. Violence was so normal in her life that she didn’t recognize it as abuse. And since she didn’t know what it was, she didn’t know where to go for help.

She stayed in a violent relationship so her kids would have a place to live. But she knew that same home could become the place she died. “I was everything to so many people, and nobody for myself.”

When Koa came to Parker's House, she says it “felt amazingly safe.” For the first time she had a place to rest, eat, sleep and breathe. In empowerment classes with Dr. Karen Alston of 4 the Jewel N U Global, Inc, she started letting go of what she’d been carrying for years.

Today Koa describes herself as an empowered woman and a woman of gratefulness. “I learned a new normal. A healthy normal. It’s a new life, and I love it.”

This week in our Domestic Violence Awareness Month series, meet Ana.

Anna was asked to leave her home late one night. She had nowhere to go. To give her children some stability, she made the hardest choice of her life and left them behind in the home they knew.

She still saw them every day. She drove them to school and picked them up. But every goodbye got harder. Then she saw it in their eyes: what had been happening to her was now happening to them.

When Anna was about to end up on the street with her son, she called Dr. Karen Alston of 4 the Jewel N U Global, Inc. Within two days, Dr. Karen found her a safe place to stay. Anna came to Union Mission’s Magdalene House, and her son never left her side.

It’s been two years. Anna says healing doesn’t happen in three months or six. Today she has a three-bedroom apartment where all her kids live with her. “We have peace. We are safe. I can provide for them.”

Last night, our community gathered in Forsyth Park to honor the 155 Georgians who lost their lives to domestic violence last year. Survivors shared their stories, and every name was read aloud.

Thank you to SAFE Shelter, Center for Domestic Violence Services, Inc. for hosting, and to Dr. Karen Alston of 4 the Jewel N U Global, Inc for standing with them. Many of the women we serve at Parker's House are survivors themselves, so moments like this matter to us. Here's to the day a vigil like this is no longer needed.

Dozens gathered at Forsyth Park for a vigil honoring victims of domestic violence.
