Our hearts are with everyone in Brevard County affected by the Nov 1–2 flooding. Here's what to do next. Please share it with a neighbor who needs it.
1️⃣ SAFETY FIRST
Avoid floodwater (Turn Around, Don't Drown). Stay clear of downed power lines and report them to FPL at 800-468-8243 or call 911. Don't go back inside until it's safe. If water reached outlets, the panel or appliances, leave the power off until a licensed electrician checks it. If you smell gas, leave the house and call from outside. City of Melbourne water customers, including West Melbourne: a precautionary boil water notice issued Nov 2 is still in effect as of Nov 3, so boil water or use bottled water and check melbourneflorida.org for updates.
2️⃣ DOCUMENT THE DAMAGE
Take photos and video of everything, including waterlines, before you start cleaning up.
3️⃣ FILE YOUR INSURANCE CLAIM PROMPTLY
Standard homeowners policies usually don't cover flood. Flood is covered by a separate policy. NFIP policyholders: call 877-336-2627 if you need help finding your insurer, or 800-638-6620 for NFIP Direct. More at floodsmart.gov.
4️⃣ ASSISTANCE
Brevard is under a state of emergency (Executive Order 26-227). As of Nov 3, no federal disaster declaration has been announced for this flood. If one is declared, apply at https://www.disasterassistance.gov or call the FEMA Helpline at 800-621-3362. You can report damage to Brevard Emergency Management here (this is not an aid application): https://crisistrack.juvare.com/public/brevardFL/request.html
5️⃣ DRY OUT WITHIN 24–48 HOURS
Remove wet carpet and drywall after you've photographed them, then run fans and dehumidifiers to keep mold from taking hold.
6️⃣ AVOID CONTRACTOR SCAMS
Verify licenses at myfloridalicense.com, get written estimates, and don't hand over large cash payments upfront. Report price gouging at 866-966-7226.
7️⃣ KEEP ALL RECEIPTS
Save receipts for lodging, supplies, cleanup and repairs.
