District 4 candidate Jason Dominguez was the only Santa Barbara City Council candidate to say the city does not share responsibility for the local housing crisis at a candidate forum co-hosted by Radius Commercial Real Estate and Meridian Group Real Estate Management () at the Cabrillo Pavilion on Thursday, September 24. The other candidates on stage said it does.

Candidates pointed to falling public school enrollment, a rising number of people living in their vehicles, and a permitting process with more than 100 application types as evidence of how housing costs are shaping the city. Dominguez, who served on the council from 2016 to 2020, argued the city cannot build its way out of the problem.

Mail-in ballots went out the first week of October. Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 3.

Meet the candidates:
District 4: Jason Dominguez (), Genevieve Taft-Vazquez (), Devon Wardlow (), Monte Wilson ()
District 5: Ian Baucke (), Cevin Cathell (), James Zurlinden ()

All 10 Santa Barbara City Council candidates present at a candidate forum co-hosted by Radius Commercial Real Estate and Meridian Group Real Estate Management () agreed that a so-called mansion tax, a transfer tax on property sales of $3 million or more, is not the right policy for Santa Barbara. Candidates from Districts 4, 5, and 6 answered the question by a show of hands at the Cabrillo Pavilion on Thursday, September 24.

The city had explored placing a mansion tax measure on the November ballot. After polling returned mixed results, city staff recommended the current council not move forward, and the measure did not make the ballot.

Mail-in ballots went out the first week of October. Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 3.

District 4: Jason Dominguez (), Genevieve Taft-Vazquez (), Devon Wardlow (), Monte Wilson ()
District 5: Ian Baucke (), Cevin Cathell (), James Zurlinden ()

Santa Barbara rents on older apartments are capped at about 2.1% for 2027.

On Oct. 6, the Santa Barbara City Council gave final approval to the city's rent control ordinance by a 4-3 vote.

Starting Jan. 1, 2027, increases on most apartments built before 1995 are capped at 60% of inflation, never more than 3% a year. Nearly every rental in the city must also register and pay an annual fee.
