Is a six-foot embankment height always the most efficient detention pond design?
Not necessarily.
In land development, 6 feet is often treated as an automatic ceiling to avoid additional dam safety requirements. But arbitrarily capping your pond height can lead to missed opportunities on site yield.
Going taller and deeper than 6 feet may significantly reduce the detention footprint—releasing valuable land back into the plan for additional building pads, parking, or residential lots.
Looking beyond standard thresholds allows project teams to:
- Maximize Developable Yield: Trade horizontal surface area for vertical depth.
- Optimize Earthwork: Balance steep topography and site grading naturally.
- Evaluate Downstream Impact: A simplified dam breach analysis, where appropriate, can help assess potential downstream consequences and support design decisions.
Good engineering isn't simply about hitting a threshold—it's about engineering beyond thresholds to maximize property value.
