🏗️ Have you noticed the crane in Redondo Harbor?

If you’re curious why it’s there, the King Harbor breakwater is currently undergoing a $6.8 million repair project after inspections found that damage from repeated wave impacts had begun accelerating.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has contractors working on the breakwater, removing and resetting existing rocks while adding approximately 8,000 tons of new armor stone, with some of those massive stones weighing up to 20 tons! The new stones are being transported from Catalina Island.

The breakwater plays an important role in protecting King Harbor and its infrastructure from ocean waves, and the Corps says it remains fully functional.

This project is especially interesting with the strong El Niño expected this fall and winter, which could bring wetter-than-normal conditions and large surf to Southern California. While we can’t predict exactly how much rain we’ll receive, it’s a good reminder of the importance of maintaining the infrastructure that protects our coastline and communities.

And speaking of preparation, this is also a good time for homeowners to take a look at their own properties before rainy season arrives. 🌧️

Whether it’s checking your roof, cleaning gutters, inspecting drainage, addressing leaks, or making any needed repairs to your home and property, a little preparation now can help prevent bigger problems later.

I’ve spent a good portion of my life enjoying King Harbor, whether it’s grabbing a bite to eat, walking around the pier & marina, enjoying the views, or spending time with family and friends. It’s easy to take the infrastructure that protects our harbor for granted, but thankfully some much needed remediation is under way!
