A beautifully set table. A little something from everyone. A Thanksgiving that leaves you time to enjoy your own party.
Hosting a potluck can be a lovely way to bring people together, especially when a few thoughtful details help the evening flow.
Give the menu a little direction.
Ask guests to claim a category, such as vegetables, potatoes, appetizers, or dessert. You’ll have a balanced spread while leaving everyone room to bring a favorite.
Coordinate the finishing touches.
Arrange dishes on complementary servingware for a cohesive table. Set out serving utensils and trivets in advance, and keep oven-safe dishes in their original cookware when needed.
Plan for arrivals.
Ask which dishes will need reheating and have guests bring food ready to serve whenever possible. A designated drop-off spot keeps everyone from gathering around the oven.
Let the room flow.
Place drinks away from the food, stack plates at the beginning of the buffet, and put napkins and flatware at the end so guests have less to carry.
Make the little details welcoming.
Label dishes and note common allergens. Clear a place for coats and bags, and have water and glasses ready for guests to help themselves.
Send a little Thanksgiving home.
Create a takeaway station with containers, labels, and a marker. Guests can pack their favorites while you keep cleanup moving. Refrigerate perishable leftovers within two hours of serving.
The best hosting details give you more time at the table, sharing the meal and the stories that come with it.
Save this for your Thanksgiving plans, and tell me: which dish always earns a place on your table?
