A Plain Hip Roof House Feels Much More Inviting When the Porch Becomes the Main Architectural Feature
The original house has a simple one story shape and practical proportions, but the flat facade and small concrete stoop make the entrance feel exposed. The transformation keeps the basic structure intact while adding a deep porch, warmer materials, stronger windows, and layered planting that give the house much more presence.
Use the Porch to Add Depth
The new porch changes the house more than any surface upgrade could. Extending it across most of the front creates a sheltered outdoor room and breaks up the long, flat wall. Substantial timber posts on stone bases give the roof enough visual support, while the small center gable makes the front door easy to find.
Keep the Roofline Simple
The existing hip roof already has clean proportions, so there is no need to add several competing peaks. The new entry gable provides just enough variation. Its exposed timber truss adds character while remaining secondary to the main roof. On a similar renovation, the new porch roof should be carefully flashed into the existing structure and designed so runoff does not collect near the foundation.
Upgrade the Windows and Door
Dark window frames create stronger contrast against the muted siding and make the openings feel larger. A natural wood front door brings warmth to the center of the facade, while simple black railings and lanterns tie the darker details together without making the exterior feel heavy.
Build Deep Beds Along the Porch
Generous planting beds help connect the new porch to the yard. Hydrangeas, coral bells, ornamental grasses, flowering perennials, compact shrubs, and other layered plants create enough height to soften the stone bases while still keeping views from the porch open. Irregular stone edging gives the beds structure without feeling overly formal.
The takeaway is that a simple one story house often benefits most from added depth. A usable porch, a clearly defined entrance, stronger contrast, and substantial landscaping can make an ordinary facade feel much more established without changing the basic house.
