🏥 A major step for pediatric care in Northern Nevada, and a few questions it doesn't answer yet.

Renown Health is planning a standalone children's hospital in Reno, backed by a $40 million gift from Tom Golisano. It's the largest philanthropic gift in Renown's history.

Here's what's confirmed today:
✅ The $40M gift, announced September 10, 2026
✅ Renown's membership in the Golisano Children's Alliance
✅ Pediatric care already running at Renown Regional on Mill Street, including a children's ER, a Level II pediatric trauma center, and a 55-bed Level III NICU

And what hasn't been announced:
🔹 Construction start and opening dates
🔹 Total cost and other funding sources
🔹 Site, building size, and bed count

The gift is meaningful funding that helps move the project forward, but it isn't proof the full cost is covered. It also doesn't tell us anything yet about home values, traffic, or nearby neighborhoods. We'll share confirmed updates as Renown releases them.

🥶 Northern Nevada's first freeze has a way of showing up while the afternoons are still pretending it's fall.

It doesn't arrive everywhere at once, either. The North Valleys, Spanish Springs and higher-elevation foothill neighborhoods often see colder nights sooner than central Reno, so it's worth getting ahead of it now.

Here's a quick cold-weather check before nighttime temperatures drop below 32°:

OUTDOOR WATER
🚿 Disconnect and drain garden hoses (a frost-free spigot can only drain when the hose is off)
❄️ Cover exterior faucets and insulate exposed pipes
💧 Winterize sprinklers, drip lines and backflow equipment. Many homeowners have an irrigation pro blow out the lines.

HEAT AND SAFETY
🔥 Test the furnace and replace the HVAC filter
🪵 Inspect fireplaces, wood stoves and fuel-burning appliances. A licensed technician or chimney sweep is the right call for a full check.
🚨 Test smoke and carbon-monoxide alarms

AROUND THE HOUSE
🪟 Check weatherstripping around doors and windows
🍂 Clear gutters and confirm water drains away from the foundation
🌱 Protect sensitive plants
💡 Test exterior lights for the darker evenings

READY FOR THE FIRST STORM
🧊 Keep snow and ice supplies somewhere you can reach them
📱 Check leak, temperature and power-loss sensors
🔧 Know where your main water shutoff is, and make sure everyone at home does too

Own a vacant or second home? Now's the time to confirm the heat setting, line up a local contact, and make sure someone can respond if the power goes out or a leak alert pops up.

A few hours of prep now can help prevent a much more expensive winter surprise later.
