Nearly 20 acres, over a century of experience, and an impressive resume.

For generations, this land has supported cattle, orchards, gardens, and the families who tended them.

Today, its fertile soils, established pastures, mature fruit trees, and historic farm structures are ready to welcome fresh ambitions. Now old roots seek new visionaries.

A new home to be built, a new agricultural venture to be imagined, or a different way of bringing people together.

Whatever comes next, there’s a remarkable foundation to build upon, and plenty of room for fresh ideas to take root.

The story of Sweet Root Hollow is a reminder that stewardship can begin with curiosity and the willingness to become a student of place.

When two city families took on nearly 12 acres on the Oregon Coast, they had very little experience managing a forest. What they did have was a deep desire to understand the land before deciding what it needed from them.

So they asked questions. They walked the property with biologists, foresters, permaculturists, nonprofits, agencies, and neighbors. They learned new skills, restored habitat, pushed back invasive species, cared for the waterways, and gradually became more capable stewards.

What stands out most is the way their relationship with the land changed along the way. The more they learned, the less stewardship became about having a vision for the property and the more it became about understanding what was already there.

To the new owners of Sweet Root Hollow, we appreciate your decade-long stewardship and wish you the best of luck on your next endeavor.

It’s hard to believe a place like this exists just minutes from downtown Poulsbo, Washington.

Nearly 20 acres of open pasture, a century-old orchard, peaceful ponds, and a winding creek make Fauna Springs Farm feel like a landscape lifted from a painting.

Much of what makes this place so special has taken generations to develop. More than a century of grazing, orcharding, and thoughtful care has shaped the land into what it is today. The old barn, silo, and mature landscape carry traces of that history, ready to become part of a new chapter.

With the original farmhouse down to the studs, the next stewards have an opportunity to restore or reimagine a home of their own, surrounded by a landscape shaped by more than a century of farming and thoughtful stewardship.

There's something wonderful about imagining a new beginning in a place with so much history.

In Wisconsin’s Driftless Area, a family of five recently became the next stewards of 9.4 acres along North Bear Creek.

When it came time to make an offer, the parents were invited to write a letter introducing their family to the current steward. Instead, they handed the task to their three children.

Their letters were filled with dreams of exploring the woods, jumping into the creek, catching lightning bugs, and spending evenings together in the little cabin.

For now, there are no grand plans. Just time to wander, swim, observe, and slowly become familiar with the land.

Over the years, this place will become part of their family’s story, just as they become part of its own.

So much of what once happened at home now happens somewhere else.

Food is grown and prepared for us. Things arrive finished. Skills once passed between generations are increasingly outsourced.

Our latest Journal article, A Life Within Reach: Reclaiming the Home, asks what we might gain by bringing some of that participation back home — by growing, making, learning, tending, and becoming more deeply connected to the places where we live.

Your dream property might never hit the market.

Some of the most distinctive farms, homesteads, and land-based properties change hands quietly, through relationships built long before a listing ever goes live.

Stone’s Throw in Corbett, Oregon is one of them. The 22-acre property recently sold off market for $1.4M, passing into the hands of a group already practiced in building a life together.

For buyers, being part of a community that aligns with your values can matter just as much as keeping a pulse on the market.

In our latest newsletter, we’re sharing the story behind the Stone’s Throw sale, along with new properties coming to market, stories from the Journal, and other places worth paying attention to.

: Stone’s Throw in Corbett, Oregon

Years before its new owners ever walked Stone’s Throw, they were already practicing the kind of life this place was built to hold.

They had spent years living alongside one another, learning how to share resources, responsibilities, privacy, and everyday life.

Now, they are the stewards of 22 acres at the gateway to the Columbia River Gorge, including the Kinship, a naturally built ceremonial space shaped from local and reclaimed materials through the work of many hands.

Latitude’s Nathan Reimer represented the buyers in the $1.4M off-market acquisition.

Every property is already telling a story.

Water, soil, vegetation, and topography leave clues. So do the ways people live on and shape the land.

Land literacy is learning to read both: where the ecology wants to lead and where thoughtful human intervention can help.

The first step is learning how to listen.
