Homeowners Report Greater Financial Satisfaction
As someone who’s spent over 25 years guiding Portlanders through the journey of homeownership, I see firsthand how owning a home can be a source of real financial confidence. In a recent survey, nearly 70% of homeowners reported feeling financially satisfied—compared to less than half of nonhomeowners. That’s a powerful reflection of how homeownership can strengthen your overall sense of security.
Of course, the path isn’t without its challenges: even among homeowners, a low-40% still live paycheck to paycheck, while just over 60% of nonhomeowners face the same struggle. The long-term reward, though, is clear. Building equity over time creates opportunities for greater wealth—one study even found that buying a home by age 30 can lead to around 23% higher net worth by age 50, or roughly $119,000 more.
That said, I always remind my clients to balance their dreams with their day-to-day realities. Stretching too far for a mortgage—especially if housing costs climb into the 30% to 40% range of your budget—can put a squeeze on other priorities. Careful planning and honest conversations are key to making homeownership a positive step toward lasting financial well-being, especially in our unique Portland neighborhoods.
