One thing you should know if your Medicare Advantage plan is being discontinued:
This isn't just about finding another Medicare Advantage plan.
If your Medicare Advantage plan is ending and you decide that Original Medicare + a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) may be a better fit for you, you may have a Guaranteed Issue Right.
That can be especially important because, under normal circumstances, once your initial Medigap enrollment period has passed, an insurance company may ask health questions and use medical underwriting when you apply.
But when certain qualifying events occur—such as your Medicare Advantage plan terminating or no longer being offered in your area—you may be able to purchase a Medigap policy without being medically underwritten.
In other words, your health history generally can't be used to deny you the Medigap policy or change the price because of your health during a guaranteed-issue period.
Timing is extremely important. For a qualifying Medicare Advantage termination, you generally have a window beginning 60 days before your MA coverage ends and continuing for 63 days after it ends to apply for a Medigap policy.
So if you receive a letter saying your Medicare Advantage plan is ending, don't panic—but don't ignore the letter either.
It may actually give you an opportunity to review both:
• Another Medicare Advantage plan
• Original Medicare + Medicare Supplement + Part D
I'll help you look at both options so you understand what you're choosing before your current coverage ends.
