Remembering Patrick
36 years ago this year, I’m remembering my dear son Patrick, who left this world suddenly at the
age of 3, on September 9th, 1990.
Patrick was born on August 11, 1987 with a severe heart defect; he had 3 surgeries and spent the
first 8 months of his life from birth at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. Then again at 18 months
old, was re-admitted to CHP for another 2 surgeries and spent another 8 months of his life at CHP.
Although he never crawled, walked, or talked because his heart was working so hard to keep him
alive, he was treated at home with in-home nursing care, home oxygen and a continuous pump feeding
while he slept to give him the nourishment to keep him alive. Patrick was a happy child who
brightened up a room. Patrick lives on forever in our hearts!
Although Patrick is no longer physically with us, we remember him daily and the reason he lived as
long as he did, was the Human Angels that surrounded him.
It was the Human Angels –The Doctors, Nurses, Respiratory Therapists and other support
staff at CHP that kept my son alive!
I can’t say enough about the CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL OF PITTSBURGH AND THE CARE THEY PROVIDE TO THE
CHILDREN OF PITTSBURH AND SURROUNDING AREAS.
