Scientists watched a crack in a piece of metal heal itself, with no human help.

Metal is supposed to get weaker over time. Every bridge, engine and airplane wing builds up tiny cracks from repeated stress, called fatigue, until something eventually breaks.

At Sandia National Laboratories in the US, researchers were testing a tiny piece of platinum by pulling on it about 200 times every second. They expected the small crack in it to grow.

Instead, about 40 minutes in, the crack started shrinking. The two sides fused back together.

The researchers say it happened through cold welding, where clean metal surfaces bond together without heat. The test was done in a vacuum, which kept air and dirt from getting between the crack faces.

It confirmed a prediction made in 2013 by Michael Demkowicz, now at Texas A&M University, who was stunned to see it really happen.

The findings were published in Nature in 2023. Scientists don't yet know if everyday metals can do this in normal air.

But a future where machines repair their own cracks is now a real possibility.
