We love to get follow ups on call outs after our inspections are done. Here’s a good one where there were multiple things wrong: hot/neutral wires reversed on the interior receptacle, the matching exterior GFCI was tripped and did not reset, and the exterior GFCI box was loose and hanging by the wires and did not have an exterior rated box. Here’s what was found when the electrician came out. The installer drilled a hole through the interior metal receptacle box then pulled through to the outside box. This nicked the insulation on the wire and caused arcing at the interior metal box and out to the exterior GFCI. Here’s the kicker: the person that initially repaired it disconnected the burned up GFCI, put it back in the box, capped the arcing and melted wires with wire nuts, and left the receptacle to hang there. All the meanwhile the arcing on the box, damaged insulation around the conductors, and wires were left alone. Small details matter, this was one that we’re glad was caught and fixed.
