What is next door, in order of how far you have to walk.

Shorefront Park and the Great South Bay, right beside the house. The band shell, where you can hear the summer concerts from the patio. The pier, which is where people end up at sunset. Rider Park along the same stretch.

Then half a mile to the Fire Island ferry, and a mile to Main Street.

The house sleeps 4, with a full kitchen, a washer and dryer, and the driveway holds two or three cars. February and March are wide open.

Planning a beach day from the house? You do not need a resident permit for Corey Beach.

Non residents pay at the pay station. It is $4 an hour Monday to Thursday and $5 Friday to Sunday and holidays, or $20 and $25 for the whole day. There is a seasonal non resident permit at $358, which only pays for itself if you are here a couple of weeks.

Checked against the Town of Brookhaven's own parking page this week, because the answer we had was out of date.

Corey Beach is about nine minutes from the front door and it is the nearest place you can actually swim in the bay. We have just written the whole thing up: which beaches you can swim at, what they cost, when the lifeguards are on.

Thanksgiving is booked. So is Christmas. That is the calendar on 21 October, and it goes the same way every year.

New Year's week is still open, 29 December through 4 January, and so is most of January.

If you have family coming and not enough beds, this is a whole house rather than two hotel rooms. Two bedrooms, a full kitchen, a washer and dryer, driveway parking for two or three cars, and the patio looks out at the bay.

The house takes stays of a month or more, and winter is when it has the room for them.

Two bedrooms, sleeps 4, a full kitchen, a washer and dryer, a desk by the window and a driveway for 2 to 3 cars. It's about a mile from NYU Langone Hospital Suffolk and about a mile from the LIRR station, so a work contract here doesn't have to mean a long drive at either end.

Bringing the dog? Worth knowing before you plan the day: Corey Beach, the nearest swimming beach, allows no pets at all. Service dogs only. That is the town's own rule, not ours.

What does work is the water's edge right here. The house is pet friendly, there are parks across the road, and the Davis Park ferry takes dogs for $6.75 if you want the island, leashed, any size.

You can reach us from Penn Station without a car. Plan on about two hours, and know that nearly every train changes at Jamaica. We used to call this a direct line toward the city. It is not, and we have fixed that.

Off peak from New York is $18.75 one way. Buy it before you board, because the conductor charges $24.00 for the same seat.

The station is about a mile from the door. The ferry to Fire Island is half that, and downtown is the same walk as the station, so arriving without a car does not leave you stuck.

We have written down the fares, the real journey times off the current timetable, and the honest version of that mile.

December, as it stands today: the 8th to the 17th is open, and so is 28 December through 15 January, New Year's included. Christmas week went in September.

The house is two bedrooms, sleeps 4, with a full kitchen, a washer and dryer and a driveway that takes 2 to 3 cars. The bay is across the road and downtown Patchogue is about a mile away.

A lot of the people who stay here used to live here.

We read through the reviews and counted the hometowns. Of the 118 guests who listed one, 20 are from the Southeast, mostly the Carolinas and Florida, and 18 still live on Long Island. The ones who moved South come back for family, and those trips happen in every season, not just July.

That's who the house suits: two bedrooms, sleeps 4, your own kitchen and your own mornings, and nobody at home has to give up a bed.

The house this autumn.

Sleeps 4, full kitchen, washer and dryer, driveway parking for 2 to 3 cars. The patio looks straight out at the Great South Bay with nothing in between.

The heat works, which matters more in November than it does in July. The bay does not close in October, and the evenings out here are better once the crowds have gone.

Ferry day tip: since 13 October, the Davis Park ferry runs just two boats Monday to Thursday. They leave Patchogue at 10:00 AM and 3:30 PM, and the last one back leaves Davis Park at 4:00 PM.

Get there 15 minutes early. The ferry company says latecomers may not be let on, and tickets are sold in person only. Parking at the terminal is a Town of Brookhaven lot, $25 a day for non-residents.

We're half a mile from the terminal, so you can leave the car in our driveway and walk. We wrote the whole thing down: parking, times, what to do if you miss the last boat back.
