Everyone loves the idea of lower property taxes. I do too.
But there’s a question we can’t ignore:
What happens to the money local governments no longer collect?
If billions in property tax revenue disappear, there are really two basic options:
spend less or find the money somewhere else.
Maybe that means cuts. Maybe it means higher fees, assessments or other taxes down the road.
That doesn’t mean the proposal is good or bad. It means there’s more to consider than the number on your property tax bill.
If you lower one tax but eventually pay more somewhere else, did you actually save anything?
