"Transformative Solutions, Healthy and Vibrant Communities"
CB-49-2019

In Conni Allen Evans' words "Yesterday I had the opportunity to speak to the County Council’s Planning, Housing, and Economic Development Committee as they consider important legislation on implementing Universal Design standards for new housing.
The goal of Universal Design is to create an environment that can be accessed and used by the ALL people (regardless of age, sex, size, or disability) to the greatest extent possible without needing to create specialized adaptations. Citizens will benefit from thoughtful and forward-thinking design plans, since it’s more expensive to remodel or retrofit something that could have been integrated in the original design. Oh, and it increases the value of the home too!"

Conni Evans, Interior Designer & Aging In Place expert, spoke on Universal Design at the Planning, Housing and Economic Development (PHED) Committee Meeting. Ms. Evans defined the benefits of Universal Design in the construction of housing for maximum functionality for people of all ages and varying abilities.

The culmination of a wonderful and purpose filled day, addressing “Smart Cities”, Domestic Violence and Education, ended with my initiative #DrivingItHome. I am delighted to announce our new #DrivingItHome regional partner, At-Large Montgomery County Councilmember Will Jawando. Councilmember Will Jawando joins Councilmember Brandon T. Todd, District of Columbia Ward 4, Mount Vernon District Supervisor Daniel G. Storck and myself to regionally change the driving culture. We all have shared challenges and concerns for everyone who travels, whether by car, bicycles, other vehicles or by foot on our roads and streets. Our paramount goal is to educate our regions by collectively changing the culture and ultimately saving lives. I am very excited to work with these dedicated partners to make a difference in our DMV communities. We are #DrivingItHome

Rousing and lively dialogue was generated at Thursday night’s Transforming Communities meeting, hosted by District 8’s Council Member Monique Anderson-Walker in partnership with MDOT SHA, DPW&T, and WMATA. This meeting was scheduled to get ahead of any final decisions and connect the community with MDOT SHA to provide a direct explanation of the proposed re-routing and closings, and so that residents could give their input as we move toward finalization of the plans.

Panelists for the evening included representatives from MDOT SHA’s Andre Futrell, District Engineer, Shannon Coyne, District Liaison, and David Jackson, Project Engineer of the 210 Project, DPW&Ts Martin Harris, Deputy Director, and WMATA’s Jim Hamre, Director of Bus Service Planning, Scheduling & Customer Facilities.

Community members stressed both enthusiasm for the completed project as well as concerns related to businesses being impacted by road closures and re-routing. When the floor was opened for questions, congestion, pedestrian access, bus re-routes, and traffic taking shortcuts as well as speeding through residential neighborhoods were among the top concerns.

Herself a resident of District 8, Council Member Anderson-Walker expressed excitement for the efficiency and safety that will come as a result of the overpass at Kirby Hill Road, but is working to make certain that the quality of life of the community does not suffer unnecessarily from the re-routing. Additionally, the Council Member has included PGCPS’ Dr. Rudolf Saunders who oversees transportation for Prince George’s county schools to evaluate the challenges that are likely to arise with children catching the school bus to the local schools.

Residents also fervently expressed their concerns about the current issues the community is facing with traffic and vehicle crashes along MD 210 and inquired what contingencies were being implemented to reduce the number of incidents.

The Council Member along with other County and State representatives also present at the meeting, have been vocal and visible with campaigns to raise awareness and implement enforcement. Council Member Anderson-Walker’s own #DrivingItHome initiative speaks directly to changing the mindset of driving culture. DPW&T’s Martin Harris touched on the Vision Zero Program to help strengthen the effort to reduce traffic deaths on county roadways and State Delegate Kris Valderrama also present at the meeting authored a bill to expand placement of speed cameras.

The Council Member along with the panel assured the audience that certain precautions are being made to address, tweak and improve the efficiency between construction and our daily commute but that the best defense starts with motorists’ personal decisions when behind the wheel.

The meeting ended with a spirited applause at the Council Member’s announcement that the next Transforming Communities meeting coming up in October will be opening discussion on the Giant Livingston Square re-development project. Attendees can expect to hear from and engage with Giant officials on project plans and have an opportunity to share their ideas. The Council Member urged the audience to attend and spread the word so that the collective District 8 community can be heard and represented.

Monthly MD 210 Update Meeting
