Opinion: 5 Reasons Prince George’s Shouldn’t Mortgage Its Future to Build Schools – Maryland Matters

With an increasing number of public school districts nationwide planning to continue distance learning in the fall, few people are thinking about the physical state of school buildings. Yet, Prince George’s County is raising eyebrows with a secretive, ill-conceived plan to build new schools using ...

Women of History

In 1948, Mary Dee Dudley became the first black female radio DJ in America with her daily 15 minute show "Movin' Around" on station WHOD in Homestead, Pa. Her show quickly captured listeners' attention and within six months her show was expanded to last an hour. She played the latest records by black artists, introduced her audience to local black talent, and interviewed celebrities like Jackie Robinson.
Within two years Movin' Around was slotted for two hours a day. At that point, she brought her brother on to run a daily news segment, focusing on issues like police beatings, living conditions in the black community, and Jim Crow segregation. Other guests discussed community and women's issues. In 1954 her show was expanded again to meet demand - this time to four hours. Mary Dee enjoyed a long career in public radio and her brother Mal became the first black news reporter for the ABC TV Network. 📸: Mary Dee Dudley, next to Erroll Garner at the piano, c. 1940-1944.

Eclectic Home New Orleans

If the past decade has shown us anything, it revealed how so many spend their lives stressed. It’s is a defining feature of our contemporary lives. We are constantly bombarded with images of so called perfection, judging ourselves to others and NOT appreciating what we have before us. Over committing and scheduling and never stopping to recharge.
One element of change that can positively impact the mood of your environment and bring about calm and serenity is; GOOD DESIGN. Some tips—

1. Organize/Declutter. There is less to worry and fret about when everything has a place.
2. Engage your senses, touch, sound, & smell . Engaging all allows our brains to slow down and be stimulated by something other than an image. It engages us and allows us to be PRESENT. Tactile objects bring comfort.
3.Dedicated spaces, such as a home office, meditation/yoga space or craft space bring about relaxation. The open floor plan is great for family gathering and entertainment but you can’t disengage and break away to calmness. Defining a space for you to relax and enjoy; for example a book or a craft space is peaceful.
4.AVOID SEEKING PERFECTION-it’s just not possible.
5. Bring outdoor views front and center. Being one with nature brings about calmness and balance.
6. Bathe in natural light. It lifts spirits and makes a space glow

Bus Converted into Mobile Food Market Brings Fresh Produce To Low-Income Neighborhoods

Urban areas are difficult for someone who wants to maintain a fresh diet. The main reason is money: fresh vegetables and fruits are expensive, because the produce has to be shipped and you end up paying for the delivery cost more than for the quality of the product itself. With the Mobile Good Food....

A must read...

Unfortunately, being land rich does not mean the land is developable or should be developed. The lack of comprehensive storm water management is evidenced in growing impervious surface leading to frequent flooding. We need to focus on developing areas that are already impervious, not expanding onto raw land. This way of redevelopment is referred to as infill redevelopment. Typically, it is realized by repurposing shopping centers, creating assemblages of sites, etc. This approach does not increase impervious surface and can maximize density thru vertical development. It is very similar to what we are seeing in NE washington, DC in the former industrial zones: New York Ave’s warehouse district, Union Market that have eliminated parking lots and rezoned to maximize height. As a result, you see Multifamily with ground level commercial, as well as multilevel stand alone commercial business uses as the new normal. Transit has also been intensified in NE quadrant of the city to support the growing density there and the tax base is increasing, due to commercial businesses being a major component to the infill redevelopment.

A 2005 law that to date has not been triggered might bar some new construction unless the county council takes action.

"Transformative Solutions, Healthy and Vibrant Communities"
CB-49-2019

In Conni Allen Evans' words "Yesterday I had the opportunity to speak to the County Council’s Planning, Housing, and Economic Development Committee as they consider important legislation on implementing Universal Design standards for new housing.
The goal of Universal Design is to create an environment that can be accessed and used by the ALL people (regardless of age, sex, size, or disability) to the greatest extent possible without needing to create specialized adaptations. Citizens will benefit from thoughtful and forward-thinking design plans, since it’s more expensive to remodel or retrofit something that could have been integrated in the original design. Oh, and it increases the value of the home too!"

Conni Evans, Interior Designer & Aging In Place expert, spoke on Universal Design at the Planning, Housing and Economic Development (PHED) Committee Meeting. Ms. Evans defined the benefits of Universal Design in the construction of housing for maximum functionality for people of all ages and varying abilities.
