🗳️ It’s official.

Orange County commissioners approved the tourist tax plan 6-1 on Oct. 19, after hearing from 78 public speakers.

📅 Funding for the projects kicks in between 2027 and 2029, depending on the project.

What do you think about the plan? Drop your thoughts below 👇

💰Who’s footing the bill? Visitors.

The money comes from Orange County’s 6% tourist development tax on hotel stays and short-term rentals.

✅ It’s paid by tourists
✅ Not by residents’ property taxes

A proposed wave lagoon is back under county review in Horizon West, and this is the latest on where the project stands. 🌊

The nearly 44-acre site near Avalon Road and Schofield Road has been in the approval process for several years. After an initial denial, developers returned with revised plans and are working through remaining county requirements. 🏗️

The proposed Orlando Surf Park sits on nearly 44 acres near Avalon Road and Schofield Road in Horizon West. 📍

The property is a former landfill site and is currently undeveloped aside from a communications tower. Orange County has previously cited environmental, technical, and transportation concerns with the project, and developers are now working to address those issues. 🚧

The plan calls for an 850-by-475-foot wave lagoon with an 80-foot artificial beach. 🏄‍♂️

Waves up to 10 feet high are part of the design, which would make it the first inland surf lagoon of this scale proposed in Central Florida. The lagoon is the centerpiece of a broader sports and lifestyle complex that also includes commercial space. 🌊

The project is more than just a wave lagoon. Retail, restaurants, and an athletic facility are planned to surround the water. 🛍️🍽️

Beach volleyball courts, smaller retail kiosks, and parking are also included in the site plan. The goal is to create a destination that combines surfing with dining, shopping, and recreational space. 🏐

Orange County denied the original proposal in late 2025, citing environmental, technical, and transportation concerns. 📋

Developers returned for further review in September 2026 and met with the Development Review Committee to discuss remaining issues. An updated site plan, revised engineering documents, and adequate public facilities calculations still need to be submitted before the project can advance. ⏳

A 4.82-acre land gap remains for the county’s adequate public f

A $1 billion entertainment district is rising just one mile from Disney World, and the latest update shows real progress on what many are already calling a Disney Springs-style destination for the Kissimmee side of the tourism corridor. 🏗️✨

The project, known as Ovation Orlando, is moving forward on the long-abandoned Orlando Sun Resort site after years of vacancy. 👀🔥

This is the former Orlando Sun Resort, a 76-acre property sitting at the northeast corner of I-4 and US-192. 🏨🌴

The resort closed around 2012 and sat vacant for more than a decade, becoming a well-known eyesore along the corridor. 🚧

Accesso Partners (with Myers Group) closed on the site in late 2025 for roughly $70 million, setting the stage for a full redevelopment just one mile from Walt Disney World. 📍🏰

Land clearing and demolition of the old resort structures are now nearly complete. 🚧🏗️
Groundbreaking has shifted to the first half of 2027, with the first phases of the district targeted to open in 2028. 🗓️⏳

The design phase is still ongoing, so some details can still evolve, but the overall timeline gives a clearer picture of when this will start taking shape along US-192. 🚀

The current plan calls for roughly 670,000 square feet of mixed-use space. 🛍️🍽️
It’s expected to be split roughly evenly between retail, restaurants, and entertainment, with three hotels totaling about 740 rooms also included. 🏨✨

The mix is designed to create a year-round destination rather than something that only draws visitors on peak days. 🌟🎉

The project has been reorganized into three distinct districts. 🌿

The Garden focuses on a more relaxed waterfront experience with tropical landscaping, patio dining, and boutique retail along the shoreline. 🌊🌴

The Gallery is planned as a creative hub blending art, technology, and immersive retail, anchored by one of the hotels. 🎨🖼️

The Vibe is designed as the higher-energy zone with flagship retail, dining, and entertainment

On October 21, ICON Park’s Orlando Eye tried to set a world record for the most people dressed as witches riding an observation wheel at the same time 🧙‍♀️

Guests in family-friendly witch costumes got free rides from 6–7pm on a first-come, first-served basis 🎟️

About 204 witches participated, with roughly 118 riding at once. Merlin Entertainments believes they hit the number needed for the record ✨

The Eye was chosen because it’s the tallest observation wheel on the East Coast and sits right in the heart of Orlando. Costumes had to be all-ages friendly (no full-face masks) 🎡

Would you have dressed up for a free ride? Drop a 🧙‍♀️ if yes!

The Orlando Sentinel’s Spooky Awards 2026 highlighted 25 of Central Florida’s most creative Halloween homes, from Celebration to Maitland and Winter Garden 🏡

One standout is 205 Celebration Blvd, packed with pumpkins, clowns, monsters, and computer-controlled displays on one of the busiest trick-or-treat streets 👻

In Maitland, the Valle family home at 2216 Chippewa Trail is covered in more than a dozen witches, plus lights, fog, and giant props that turn it into a destination 👀

Many of the award-winning homes use projection mapping, giant skeletons, and interactive elements. They’re best viewed after dark—arrive early to beat the crowds 🌙

Save this if you’re planning a neighborhood drive this weekend ✅

This week in Orlando is full of good news ☀️🎄

From new openings and community wins to sports energy and perfect fall weather, there’s a lot happening across Central Florida right now. I pulled together some of the most positive updates from around the area — the kind of stuff that makes living here feel exciting and gives people more reasons to get out and explore.

I tried to focus on the things that are actually happening soon or already underway, not just distant plans. Swipe through and see which ones stand out to you 👇 I’d love to hear what you’re most looking forward to.

Florida’s first Spirit Christmas store is now open in Winter Garden 🎄✨

If you’ve been to a regular Spirit store before, you know the vibe — big displays, inflatables, lights, and that over-the-top seasonal energy. This one is fully Christmas-focused, and it’s located right by Disney, which makes it convenient if you’re already heading that direction or live on the west side of town. A lot of people start decorating the moment the weather cools off even a little, so having a dedicated Christmas store open this early is a big deal.

It’s one of those places that feels fun just to walk through even if you’re not buying anything yet. The displays alone are worth a visit if you like holiday décor. Have you stopped by yet, or is it on your weekend list? 🎅

Church Street is getting a major glow-up. 🚧✨

Downtown Orlando just broke ground on a multi-phase transformation that turns the historic corridor into a pedestrian-friendly “festival street.” Wider walkways, decorative lighting, more landscaping, outdoor dining space, and a curbless design are replacing the old roadway so people can move more easily between restaurants, shops, and events.

Phase one (Garland to the tracks) is underway as part of a larger $12 million investment, with the full east-west vision targeted for completion by summer 2028. It’s all about bringing back the energy that once made Church Street one of Florida’s top tourist draws.
