You know whatβs crazy? I used to think I was making my own choices. Turns out a lot of them were just habits I picked up from the world around me.
You know what really screwed me up? Think about this. If you had been born just a few miles away, or a few thousand miles away, what patterns would you have picked up as a child? What patterns have you adopted that you now defend by saying, βThatβs just who I amβ?
Even saying this out loud screws me up a little more. Iβll watch somebody go through the same pattern over and over, and itβs so obvious to me. Then I have to ask myself, βWhat do the people who love me see me doing over and over that I still canβt see?β
Hereβs one I finally caught. Somebody could be halfway through a sentence and Iβd already be worked up about what I thought they meant. Theyβd still be talking, and in my head I was already arguing back.
Tony Robbins helped me see the choices I was making in those few seconds. What was I focusing on? What meaning was I giving their words? What was I going to do next? Sometimes the choice that changed the whole conversation was letting them finish and saying, βInteresting. Tell me more.β
Most people who know me would probably tell you they rarely see me angry. I do get angry. I do get frustrated. When I feel that happening, I try to get back to peace, calm, and love. Sometimes that means taking a breath so the next thing out of my mouth sounds like the man I want to be.
So why do I volunteer on the Tony Robbins crew and work 10 to 15 hours a day for free? Because that organization saved my life. I remember sitting in that room and realizing I could change something Iβd spent years calling βjust who I am.β I want somebody else to have that moment.
I believe that if I expect wealth and prosperity in my own life, I have a responsibility to share what Iβve been given.
And thatβs it... I serve because itβs my responsibility to give back and offer others the gifts that were given to me.
That gift wasnβt given to me to keep.
